My ferret has small, circular, itchy scabs on his back. What is it?

Hi there! It's hard to tell from the picture but it does look like Loco might have a little scrape or scab on his chin. It may be due to irritation from his bath or trauma if he has been scratching at it. Keep a close eye on it - if it spreads or worsens, swells, seems painful, or begins oozing, take him back in to see your veterinarian. You can gently clean it with warm water and try to apply some Neo-Sporin but Loco may rub it off! Good luck and I hope Loco feels better soon!

It is important to find out why they are itching first before putting anything on them. They could be suffering from a mite infection, a fungal or a bacterial infection. All of these cause serious itch and each of these is treated differently. Please take your ferrets to your vet for an exam to determine why they are itching. Mites itch terribly, the skin gets scabby and fur gets lost. Mites are easily treated with avermectin injections. A fungal infection may need oral medications or antifungal shampoo or both and a bacterial infection is usually treated with oral antibiotics.

Hello. A ferret that is pruritic ( itchy ) without signs of ectoparasites ( fleas, lice ) is adrenal gland disease until proven otherwise. It is not uncommon for very itchy ferrets to have no obvious signs of hair loss. Occasional, cutaneous mast cell tumors can be very pruritic. These are almost always benign in ferrets & removal is curative. I would encourage you to have your ferrets evaluated by a veterinarian & have some diagnostic tests done to find the underlying cause of the itching. Then appropriate treatment can be started. Hello, and thank you for the detailed photos. It appears to be a bald spot with some scaling. Possible reasons include a mild bacterial infection, fungal infection, mites, or allergies. I would suggest taking Rusti to the vet where they can perform a skin scraping and cytology test to check for some of the above. If there is no sign of infection, they may prescribe some medication to help reduce inflammation and itchiness in the skin, in case of allergies. In the meantime, if he is scratching at the area, you can place an e-collar (cone) over his head to help prevent further trauma. I hope this helps, and that Rusti is feeling better soon!

Has your vet mentioned anything about environmental allergies? It may be that Rusty is allergic and this is leading to his current issues. While I understand he's 10 and this hasn't been an issue in the past it doesn't sound like, it is still possible that its contributing. If your vet thinks allergies may be playing a role, he or she may recommend trying some prednisone which is a steroid, or a medication called apoquel. You can try using a shampoo designed for itchy skin, that may help as well if you do it once a week or so. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I would not use anti-itch cream. It is not harmful I just don't think it is the best thing to use. Using something like this wound gel would be better.
