What is this red spot with a black dot on my ferret's belly?

I am so sorry to hear this. I’m sure you are worried about Loki. Anytime there is a possible bite wound to the abdomen such as this there is high risk of damage to the internal organs. There does not have to be a puncture to cause damage. Unfortunately there is no way to know without an exploratory surgery to look at the intestines. Usually there are no initial signs until a few days later when the tissue starts to necrose and the patient becomes septic. Certainly there is always a possibility that the damage is only skin deep, but there is such a high risk if it is not. I see the small bump you are referring to - it is definitely suspicious of a tick, especially if Bear is going outside. It may also be a small wound or a localized skin infection, but I'm unable to tell what it is from the photo, unfortunately. I recommend having Bear seen by a vet, especially because this looks very suspicious of a tick, which should be removed as soon as possible. Ticks can also transmit diseases, so your vet may recommend some prophylactic treatment. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Hi there! It's hard to tell from the picture but it does look like Loco might have a little scrape or scab on his chin. It may be due to irritation from his bath or trauma if he has been scratching at it. Keep a close eye on it - if it spreads or worsens, swells, seems painful, or begins oozing, take him back in to see your veterinarian. You can gently clean it with warm water and try to apply some Neo-Sporin but Loco may rub it off! Good luck and I hope Loco feels better soon!

Thanks for reaching out about Santiago and including a photo. Dermal infections or a histiocytoma are common dermal conditions in ferrets. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Monitor for self trauma and scratching, as if opens up, more likely to become infected. Good luck.

I would be concerned that Loki has fleas or possibly skin mites or a skin infection. I would keep him separated from the other ferret for now in case this is something contagious. I agree that Loki needs to be seen by a vet. I. The meantime try bathing him with a ferret or kitten shampoo and try to comb or brush out his coat. This may help to keep him more comfortable. I would be happy to provide a consultation and take a look at some photos. If you notice that the spot becomes larger, changes shape, or starts bleeding, you should have him examined by a vet as soon as possible. Your vet can take a sample from the region to determine exactly what it is.
