Is 80°F too hot for my ferret, or are drafts from fans worse?

Keep her indoors or out of direct sunlight. Use a fan or air conditioning if it is hot. Always provide access to fresh water. Monitor for lethargy, panting or increased body temperature. Temperature above 104 F can be dangerous. Use a rectal thermometer and sterile lube to take a reading. Seek veterinary attention immediately if her temp is elevated or if she develops any of the above symptoms.

I am sorry to hear about your ferret! A temperature can be taken using a well lubricated thermometer rectally (most accurate so recommended if you can), or but holding the thermometer under her armpit and adding 1 to 2 degrees (you will need to press her arm against her body to ensure the thermometer is pressed up against the skin on all sides. You can also purchase a thermometer made to take a temperature from the forehead and press it against your ferrets naked belly/groin area. Most ferrets will hold still if you gently hold them by their scruff with the legs dangling. Lubricate a normal digital thermometer with large amount of ky jelly, Vaseline, or other lubricant and insert about an inch into the rectum. Normal temperature is 100 to 103 degrees so they area little warmer than we are, so it is possible she feels warm to you due to her normal temperature being high than ours. If her temperature is over 103, a vet exam is needed.

Most pets can tolerate temperatures that we ourselves can tolerate. As long as it is not greater than 90-95 degrees or lower than around 25-30 degrees, most pets will be ok. Ferrets occasionally suffer from colds and flu quite similar to humans, they will often sneeze and be lethargic when that happens. when a ferret has a fever he will usually stay still, sleep a lot and won't eat much. in order to get him better you will need to take him to the vet as he he may need to take medications to get better.

They can tolerate temps up to 90-95 F. In the wild, they would seek shelter in a tree or other protected nest. A fan or air conditioning can be set to keep the temperature down in the acceptable range. They should not be directly in front of vents or fans though.

In some cases, infection can be life threatening. I recommend separating Cheech from his companion immediately and having him seen by a vet. You should wear a disposable mask and gloves when handling your ferrets until you recover. Your vet can stabilize him if necessary, and prescribe the appropriate medication to keep him comfortable.
