How to prevent ferret heat stroke and keep them cool in hot weather?

The best thing you can do is prevention. Try to have access to cool water and shade at all times. Cats are much more resourceful at Finding cool areas and rarely have heat stroke, but they can. Unfortunately if a feral cat can not receive veterinary care then all you can do is provide a cool environment. Do not wet the cat with water especially ice water as it constricts the vessels and keeps the heat in the body. Slow cooling with fans and cool environment is the best option. Normal room temperature should range anywhere between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Ferrets cannot tolerate temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit so, if you had to choose, colder would be a bit better.

I am sorry to hear about your ferret! A temperature can be taken using a well lubricated thermometer rectally (most accurate so recommended if you can), or but holding the thermometer under her armpit and adding 1 to 2 degrees (you will need to press her arm against her body to ensure the thermometer is pressed up against the skin on all sides. You can also purchase a thermometer made to take a temperature from the forehead and press it against your ferrets naked belly/groin area. Most ferrets will hold still if you gently hold them by their scruff with the legs dangling. Lubricate a normal digital thermometer with large amount of ky jelly, Vaseline, or other lubricant and insert about an inch into the rectum. Normal temperature is 100 to 103 degrees so they area little warmer than we are, so it is possible she feels warm to you due to her normal temperature being high than ours. If her temperature is over 103, a vet exam is needed.

I would strongly encourage you only to take short walks and do it first thing in the morning or the evening when it isn't as hot. To help keep her cool outside, be sure there is plenty of shade and water as well as a fan for her to get access to. Preferably, if you can keep her inside during the day, I would. Signs of heavy panting and laying on their side panting a lot are both early signs that she is getting too hot. As a heat stroke progress, they can become non-responsive, the tongue can be bright pink/red to even purple if she is having trouble getting oxygen. The best thing to do is to try to prevent this from happening. I hope this helps!

Remove the cage to a cooler area of the home. Lightly mist her with water or provide a bowl she can bathe in. Make sure she is drinking to keep hydrated and eating normally. If she doesn't perk up in a few hours, you will need to find a veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian to examine her.

Hello! That is very hot! You are right to be concerned for heat stroke. Make sure that he will have access to lots of fresh water- leaving a few bowls out with ice cubes in the morning may be a good idea. You can also make a cheap "air conditioner" with a fan and an ice pack that may help keep the area cool. Dark curtains may also help keep the apartment cooler throughout the day.
