Mice are fastidious groomers, & will consume anything left on their bodies. You must clean the cage & replace any bedding that is soiled immediately to control odors. If the cage is clean, the mice will not smell too bad. If the cage granules indicate they can be used with mice, then by all means use it. Otherwise, use a rodent friendly substrate to keep your mice happy & healthy. Take care.

Hi, and thank you for posting this question. I have never read or seen anything reported on the safety of hamsters and vinegar. However, I have personally used it in the past in my own hamster’s cage. In my experience there was no problem as long as I rinsed and dried the cage well. I hope this helps! Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Hamsters like to have their food and bed in the same place. The area where Honey goes to the bathroom during the day should be spot cleaned daily and the bedding should be replaced weekly. I recommend leaving a small amount of the old bedding so that the scent from Honey is retained in the cage. I would clean and refill the water bottle and food bowl daily. A clean cage will result in a happy and healthy hamster. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

If the cage is cleaned frequently the ventilation may be adequate however I would be very nervous that the hamster would escape from these open areas. They can be very agile climbers and are escape artists. I would recommend a commercially available cage instead to ensure that your hamster does not escape! Also, even if you place a mesh over the area, if the hamster can get to the corner/edge of the plastic they can easily chew the plastic and escape that way!

According to the Purdue University Veterinary school handout on hamsters, Timothy Hay can be used as bedding for hamsters. It will absorb some urine, but it does not control odors and will mold when wet. You can use it as a top dressing over a paper-like bedding, and change the hay every one to two days. The bedding underneath will have to be changed once a week. Fresh Timothy hay is best, as pre-packed hay bought in the pet store is dried to prevent molding, which makes it harder and less suitable for bedding. Marie can also nibble on the hay as a supplement.

Thanks for reaching out. Are you asking will it be safe for ferrets and a good cleaner. Yes since birds are typically more sensitive to chemicals than ferrets. A vinegar solution would work well also. Good luck.
