Why do my mice smell? Are products and cage bedding safe for them?

Well, the website say yes. But trying to mask the odor of urine probably means you just need to clean the cage more often. The ammonia in urine can be very harsh on the lung tissue, and the hamster is living at the level of the fumes. Hamster cages just need to be spot cleaned daily to remove the urine soaked substrate. Mice make very fun little pets! You will want to use a bedding substrate that is dust free. I recommend Care Fresh. It will need to be changed about once weekly. They love the have the little wheels to run in and most of them enjoy another mouse for company. You can give them a sock to make a nest out of but it should not be the primary bedding. In general you will not need an additional heat source as long as the house is warm. Keep the cage away from drafty windows and in a warm room. Mice also like to have toilet paper tubes and boxes to play and hide in. Make sure as well that you are feeding an appropriate diet meant for mice. Let me know if you have any other questions!

yes, mice can make good pets if you handle them enough. They need their cage cleaned once a week. Rats can also make very engaging pets. I do need a little more information to give you a better idea about what is going on - were there any signs prior to death? Some mice carry bacteria and viruses that do not necessarily make them sick, but can be transmitted to other mice and be harmful. A handful of different components can lead to respiratory infections in mice, whether viruses or bacteria. Mycoplasmal infections, for example, often occur in mice. When mice have respiratory infections, they often display cold-like clues, including problems breathing normally and runny noses. If your mouse is breathing in a manner that seems inordinately loud, a respiratory infection could be responsible. Other typical symptoms of respiratory infections in mice are weight loss, reduced desire to eat, exhaustion, barely moving around and messy looking fur. The bedding in Popcorn's enclosure could be the reason for her persistent sneezing as well. Ask your veterinarian for types of bedding that are less dusty and cause less irritation to the nostrils. If the sneezing is the result of any illness, your veterinarian can provide treatment options. Remember, mice, like other pets, require regular vet checkups regardless of the presence of signs of illness. Take your mice to the vet a minimum of once annually. If she sneezes or seems sick, go to the vet immediately, even if she just had her yearly appointment. I hope this is helpful!

I have never heard anyone describe this type of smell before in reference to their rabbit's cage. The best I can tell you is to be sure to clean the cage frequently and be sure you are using an appropriate substrate.
