Is my DIY container cage safe for a dwarf hamster's ventilation needs?

Do not use an aquarium tank. A suitably sized (and secure) wire cage with a solid bottom is recommended. HabiTrail and Kaytee have excellent choices for cages. Buy the largest cage you can afford and fit in the chosen space. You can use recycled paper bedding such as CareFresh or Yesterday's News. Aspen shavings or pellets are also acceptable. Do not use pine or cedar shavings as these can be irritating. A commercial diet from Kaytee or VitaKraft can be fed from a ceramic bowl. A ceramic bowl prevents gnawing and tipping. A non chewable water bottle can be hung to provide fresh water daily. Other necessary items include chew toys and an exercise wheel. Find a veterinarian experienced in treating pocket pets and have your new addition examined to confirm good health. Feed, water and exercise daily. Clean the cage weekly. These little guys require very little care and can provide lots of entertainment. Congrats and enjoy!

In most instances a cage is recommended over an aquarium for small mammals because there can be inadequate ventilation with glass aquariums and ammonia from the urine can build up within the cage and cause respiratory problems. A wire cage with small bar spacing is often recommended with a thick layer of paper bedding (such as Carefresh bedding) and plenty of areas to climb and hide.

Well, the website say yes. But trying to mask the odor of urine probably means you just need to clean the cage more often. The ammonia in urine can be very harsh on the lung tissue, and the hamster is living at the level of the fumes. Hamster cages just need to be spot cleaned daily to remove the urine soaked substrate. The only thing that I would be concerned with would be if the wood is coated with any type of toxic substance. I believe you can find houses meant for rodents (since these guys chew so much). I would stick with these. Thank you for using Pet Coach!

I don't generally recommend to do this. Another animal could break into the cage and harm the hamster. The temperature may get too cold or too hot. It's best to keep it inside where it is safe and the temperature is controlled. I hope this helps.

Hello! A rusty cage is not recommended for a few reasons. First, your hamster could be exposed to heavy metals like lead and zinc that are components of cage metals. Animals are protected from these heavy metals by the powder coating that’s applied, but as the cage ages and the coating cracks and peels off, exposure can occur. The rust is an indication that any powder coating is old and compromised. Secondly, the rusty bars may damage your hamsters insicors and this could become a bigger issue if there is an incisor fracture or damage to the roots. I would recommend getting a new cage for these reasons. Hope that helps.

Yes, these can make great homes for hamsters. Be sure to secure the top to prevent escape. Be careful to allow adequate air circulation. You can make use of the vertical space as well. Do not use colored plastic bins.
