Why are my healthy baby rabbit kits suddenly dying after birth?

It is quite common for mothers to abandon a baby if there is a significant birth defect that may limit survival. It may b worthwhile attempting to bottle feed but success rate is very poor in rabbits even without additional complications

It sounds like she is not cut out to be a mom. These non-vialbe pups may be due to a chronic viral infection or an inherent problem with her uterus. Regardless, I suggest you either keep her from getting pregnant again by not housing her with any males or have her spayed. That is the only way to keep this from happening again.

Without any other information to go on, it would be impossible to say. I highly recommend bringing one of the rabbits that has passed away to your vet or a local veterinary school to perform a necropsy. This can give some insight to any infectious diseases or toxicities that could be transmitted without symptoms. Fly strike, getting into something toxic, sudden temperature changes, extreme fear, etc are all potential causes as well which is why further information or examination is needed.

I am very sorry to hear about the sudden death of your rabbits. Unfortunately, without a true post-mortem examination, making a positive determination of cause of death will be impossible. In general, some causes of sudden death in seemingly health rabbits would include cardiac abnormalities, poisoning, and ingestion of a foreign objection resulting in choking or bleeding. Since you recently moved them to another pen and multiple bunnies died, my suspicion is that a toxin could be involved. I would inspect the area thoroughly for any unusual plants or objects. I would also be curious to know if the pen could have been accessed by other wildlife, potentially even something venomous or poisonous. Once again I am very sorry. I hope this helps a little bit.

I am so sorry that your rabbit died. Without actually examining the rabbit it is difficult to know the cause of death but he might have had an infection or tumor that caused death. If you want to get another rabbit then you should disinfect anything the rabbit came in contact with in case it was an infectious disease. Once again, so sorry.

If they are just getting cow milk and cabbage, then this could definitely explain why they are dying. Rabbit milk is much different than cows milk and they usually don't need it after 5 weeks of age. They should have grass and quality hay offered as the main source of their diet. At this time they should be fed almost exclusively grass and hay. Milk (if needed) would only need to be fed once or twice a day. Feeding milk more than this and at an older age can lead to intestinal problems, which are deadly for rabbits. There are other environmental factors that could be causing them to die, so make sure you are housing them appropriately and are making sure they are not too hot. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately it sounds like the little bunny is likely not going to make it. It sounds like it might be having agonal breaths. I recommend you bring both the mother bunny and the remaining live bunnies to a vet right away to try to see if there is something you can do for the other two bunnies.
