My Pacman frog has deep, red leg cuts. Is this an emergency?

Thanks for reaching out about Fray. Red leg is typically caused by a bacterial infection, Aeromonas hydrophila andis secondary to other concerns. Water quality and husbandry need to be reviewed and corrected. A veterinary visit is recommended to assist with the prescription of antibiotics needed to treat. Nothing over the counter will treat this, no matter what the advertisement. Good luck.

It is difficult to determine a leg injury with these photos. Fractured legs rarely heal in a aquarium/terrarium environment due to the animals movements usually does not allow stabilization of the fracture site. Also, splinting the limbs is near impossible for the same reason. If you think this frog has a fracture, it probably needs to see a veterinarian, especially before it gets worse (such as an open fracture with bone exposed). I have amputated several frog/toad limbs in my day and most do well and have good quality of life, although tougher time catching prey. Might have to feed via forceps. Good luck.

I am so sorry to hear that Frogs was injured, but I am happy that you have found a veterinarian in your area who can see him. If you are seeing a loss of the toes, I would also be concerned about infection. Alternatively, these toes may have fallen off due to a lack of blood supply, which can happen with broken bones as well. I would recommend taking Frogs back to your veterinarian, as they can evaluate him and then prescribe antibiotics if they feel that the area is infected. I hope that gives you a place to start, and I hope that Frogs has a quick recovery.

Unfortunately, no image was attached to your question. If the wound/scar is old or healed and the frog is behaving normally, there is likely no cause for concern. Monitor for redness, swelling, discharge, lethargy or loss of appetite. These are symptoms of potential infection and should be addressed by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating amphibians. Remove her from her main tank and put her in a smaller hospital tank. You can use paper towels for substrate. Change them daily. Increase tank temps to 80 F with a basking spot of about 85 F. Maintain humidity at 70%. Mist her daily and provide a water bowl. Use only dechlorinated water. It she isn't defecating normally, a soak in a honey and water solution may stimulate defecation. A dilute unflavored PediaLyte solution can treat or prevent mild dehydration. Offer appropriately sized prey, no bigger than the space between her eyes. You can also feed bits of nightcrawlers. If the redness and symptoms persist, have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles and amphibians.

Antibiotics and analgesics are recommended. Concerns would be he was chewed on by something, so outdoor time should be limited to daytime only. No access to dirt to decrease potential of further infection. Clean now by soaking in warm tap water. See a veterinarian, ASAP. Good luck.

Ouch - poor pup! This wound looks quite deep, so yes - I would definitely recommend a vet visit. This may need stitches, depending on how long ago it happened, and your pup will certainly need antibiotics to prevent it from becoming infected while it heals.
