My dog has a deep leg injury. Should I take him to the emergency vet?

Ouch, your poor pup! You need to take him into the vet as soon as possible. It needs to be cleaned sterilely, he may need x-rays to see if there are any possible broken bones, he needs antibiotics to prevent an infection, some of the cuts may need sutures, and he will need pain medication. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet will determine the appropriate treatment needed. Please take him into one now.

Those wounds should be seen by your vet for care, even if they elect to not suture them. Bites can carry bacteria deep into the tissue, causing infection. I recommend getting him in to see your vet as soon as possible for evaluation and wound care.

I am sorry to hear about Shelby. It is difficult from the photo to tell what we are looking at but it appears to be her hind leg? She most definitely needs to get to the vet right away- to the emergency vet if your vet is not open. This is a severe wound that has retracted and exposed the muscle beneath the skin. It's a bit difficult to tell from these pictures, but it does appear deep and wide enough that it will need stitches. It's best to take him to a vet soon, because the wound will heal better the sooner it is cleaned and stitched. For now, you can flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Wish to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Infection is the biggest concern with these wounds; so after flushing, it's best to apply an antibacterial cream to the wound. Your vet will be able to advise further treatment after evaluating it. The skin is quite far apart, it will take quite a long time to heal and there is risk of infection. I recommend to take him at the vet to have I'm checked, have the hair trimmed, the area throughly cleaned l to have a proper look at the wounds and decide the next step. Please have Ann examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER today. That wound will likely need to be explored and debrided surgically. This will require anesthesia. A culture/sensitivity and biopsy of the area should be submitted as well. The C&S will identify any bacteria as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment. Even though she was on antibiotics, if the bacteria was not susceptible to them, they would be ineffective. A biopsy will rule out neoplasia (cancer). Either can cause delayed healing or non-healing. If infection gets into the bone, it could turn into a life threatening condition. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking until she sees a doctor.
