My male leopard gecko has swollen genitals. Is this an emergency?

Oh, your poor little Gecko! That's rough! Are you sure it is a female? The two things coming out the back end may be hemipenes as the males have two bulges on the underside fo the tale where their hemipenes are. If that is what is going on, it means a vet needs to try to put them back or or they may need to be amputated. Also, your little friend may need some anti inflammatory meds to reduce swelling after being stuck like that.

Are there possibilities he ingested something that could be obstructing his intestinal tract? Providing a shallow warm water soak for 5-10 minutes might stimulate defecation. Intestinal parasites or bacterial infections might also cause distention. If Redd continues to eat, you have some time to monitor things, but if he stops eating, becomes painful, or the distention increases, seek a reptile veterinarian sooner than later. Good luck.

I am sorry to hear about your guinea pig. A photograph may help us better evaluate the area. If you are certain the area looks swollen (meaning you have viewed the area previously and it now appears altered) I would recommend a visit to the vet for your guinea pig. Thanks for reaching out about Pinky but the picture is un-recognizable and out of focus. A distended stomach is a possible obstruction, maybe from the chewed paper towels. If distended for a month, a veterinary visit is highly recommended. Try offering a shallow warm water soak, which might encourage defecation. Still, see a veterianrian. Good luck.

Hello Becca. Great question! I suspect he has seminal plugs. It would be best if you could take him to a reptile vet for an exam as I'm only guessing as to what the problem may be but I'm fairly confident this is the issue. Sometimes you can call a local exotics shop and the staff there may be able to help you get the plugs out. I don't think the Petsmart staff is trained well enough to help you with this so I don't recommend you take him there. These two exotic vets are within about 20 minutes of your zip code. I am so sorry to hear that Gizmo is not feeling well. Reptiles have what is called a vent which is a single opening through which they defecate, urinate and copulate. So he could be licking the area due to a problem with his intestinal system, urinary system or reproductive system. If he is struggling to defecate, I would be worried that Gizmo has an impaction or blockage in his intestinal tract. Sometimes they pick up and eat things that they shouldn't when going to grab insects. Also, are you sure that Gizmo is a boy? If not, female reptiles can potentially become egg bound (unable to pass eggs). I would recommend taking Gizmo to the veterinarian to have an exam and possibly x-rays so that he can be treated appropriately. Best of luck to you and Gizmo.
