Is the wild snake my boyfriend found a garter snake and is it safe?

If he's wild I would contact a local wildlife rescue, rehab or vet in your area to see if they can take him in for care. Until then, be careful when handling him and keep him as calm and quiet as possible.

A garter snake Bite is not likely to be dangerously toxic to your dog, some swelling will probably occur and if the swelling is too severe you should definitely take him to the vet to get treatment, but he should be fine otherwise.

If you can see the pupils clearly and safely, then you can determine if it is a danger. Most non-venomous snakes have round pupils. Venomous snakes have slits (think of the dragon, Smaug, from The Hobbit movies). If you are unsure, keep your distance and contact Animal Control. The image is blurry and dark, which makes identification difficult.

If regurgitates again, a veterinary visit is recommended. Intestinal parasites or infections are not uncommon. First, you should check with local, state and federal laws to make sure you can keep a wild caught snake. Even if legal, it isn't recommended since wild caught animals do not transition well to captivity. Feed it what he would eat in the wild. That would be fish, salamanders and other aquatic species. Feeder fish would be easiest and most convenient. Place them in a shallow bowl on feeding days. It may not see frozen/thawed mice as food, so may not eat.

Without an image, it is difficult to determine. It may indeed be an introduced species. Another possibility would be a slow worm , or legless lizard which are common in the UK. If you still have it, submit it to a veterinarian experienced in treating reptiles or to a zoo for identification.

It is possible that Snickers got bit and may have a small wound, especially if he is licking the area. I recommend trying to examine his foot and see if there are any visible wounds. If he continues to seem irritated by his foot, i.e. keeps licking it, for longer than a day, I would have him seen by your veterinarian. If he has a wound, it can be become infected and even abscessed (pocket of infected fluid), if left unmanaged. I hope this is helpful!
