What should I do if I find an injured garter snake with cuts?

Thanks for reaching out and including a photo. Does appear to be a garter snake, which are not poisonous. Just because not venomous, does not mean it wont' bite and they still have saliva that can cause some reactions in humans. In many states, keeping wildlife captive is not legal and is very stressful on the snake. Consider re-releasing or presenting to a wildlife rehabilitation society. Good luck.

If the snake has wounds on its body I would recommend a veterinary exam to be sure antibiotic treatment isn't necessary. You can clean off the wounds with a mild warm soapy water for now and schedule an appointment with your vet when they open tomorrow. The topical antibiotic I have used in snakes is called silvadene, but it is a prescription only medication so if that is what is required, you will need to get a prescription from your veterinarian for this medication.

Just like any reptile, these guys are going to require special habitats and nutritional requirements in order to maintain their health. This will include special lighting UVB, special substrate, and supplemental heating. The main concern you should have is making sure that there are no injuries to it since your cat grab it pretty good. He may be sluggish right now just from the general shock of the entire experience, but if his demeanor doesn't start changing soon, I would look into finding a reptile vet or wildlife rehabber to obtain some advise and/or medical treatments. I'm glad you found him! Since he was missing for so long, an exam with your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet would be strongly recommended to diagnose and treat any illness or injury. In the meantime, give him a good soak in a warm 50/50 solution of water and unflavored PediaLyte. This will warm him up and provide hydration. Once he's warm and hydrated, he will be more likely to accept prey.

A garter snake Bite is not likely to be dangerously toxic to your dog, some swelling will probably occur and if the swelling is too severe you should definitely take him to the vet to get treatment, but he should be fine otherwise.

He should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. If your vet is unavailable, have him seen at the nearest veterinary ER. The wounds should be assessed and treated as indicated. Antibiotics and pain management will likely be indicated. Secure the tank to prevent incursions by predators or scavengers.
