Chameleon can't move her legs. Is it MBD? How to find a reptile vet?

Hello. Ok so we have 2 chameleons a f and a m and we were on vacation and just go back yesterday. And found that the female is having a hard time to move her legs. They look weak or liked of like broken. She hardly moves and stays at the bottom of the cage bacause she cant climb up. Please help us we can’t find a reptile vet here. Thanks

Sounds like MBD. Without more information all I can tell you is that you should take them to see a reptile veterinarian. This could be trauma/injury but honestly, most problems we see with reptiles are due to improper diet and/or husbandry. I would to know how long you have had them, what is their cage setup, what is the lighting/temperature/humidity set up, what diet have you been feeding, any supplements? How long were you gone? Etc. I don't have enough information to go on.

Survey the area around the cage for any negative stimuli. This may include loud noises, strong vibrations, strong drafts or high traffic. Reduce or eliminate any if found. Confirm proper temperature. If it is too hot up high, he will move to cooler temps. Be sure to gut load prey for 24 hours prior to offering to maximize nutritional value. Dust with a calcium supplement as well as a multivitamin regularly. If the behavior persists, consider an exam with your vet or a vet experienced in treating reptiles to diagnose and treat illness or injury. Thanks for reaching out about Charlie. Concerns would be a spinal or back injury, possibly while struggling. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic treatment plan. Back injuries are more likely to respond to treatments earlier than later. Remove perches and provide a comfortable surface on which to lie, such as clean towels. Good luck.

Why did my chameleon stop using its hind legs? Is it calcium?
This sounds like metabolic bone disease. Very common symptom for this is loss of use of the back legs due to calcium deficiency. I doubt it has anything to do with him climbing around on you other than that activity used up the available calcium he had in his body. Are you sure your husbandry is 100% correct? Diet, lighting, temperature, supplements, etc. This is almost always due to improper husbandry. I suggest you review all of your husbandry and get him to a reptile vet for treatment. My friend's chameleon looks sick. What's wrong and what should I do?
Thanks for reaching out about the chameleon and including pictures. The first photo with the swayed back is very suspect of MBD/calcium deficiency. Diet and husbandry need to be review and correct, and a veterinary visit should be scheduled ASAP. Typically concerns are poor calcium in the diet, lac of UV light, poor temperature, etc. This is an emergency. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Pablosita and including a photo. A veterinary visit is recommended in an attempt to determine spinal trauma vs. soft tissue trauma. Both conditions have a better prognosis is treated early. Calcium deficiencies can lead to weaker both more sensitive to trauma. Besides anti-inflammtories, acupuncture and other alternative medicine modalities could be beneficial. Good luck.

Paraplegia in a reptile is a very bad prognostic indicator. I would call up the company who shipped this animal to you right away and let them know what is hapening. Unfortunately, many of these companies have disclaimers regarding injuries or illness during shipping, so they may not be so willing to help you. In terms of medical care for your reptiles, I just did a quick look into your surrounding area. There are a couple of doctors in East Lansing and Grand Rapids who appear to treat reptiles. Because there aren't many around, many times they are happy to just talk to your on the telephone if you give them a call and describe what is going on. Hope this helps.

My chameleon is dying. What can I do if I can't afford a vet?
Hello, I’m so sorry to hear about your chameleon. What you are describing sounds very serious. Without doing an exam, I really can’t determine what could be going on, but I worry she could have a serious infection, retained eggs, or some other problem. Unfortunately, she may be in terminal stages of a disease. Given how serious this sounds, I honestly don’t think there is anything you can do at home without the help of a veterinarian (besides keeping her warm and hydrated). Any antibiotic that would be effective in a reptile her size would need to be prescribed by a veterinarian. If you believe she is dying, then euthanasia may be an option to ease her suffering, and this is typically a reasonably priced service. I’m very sorry she is so ill.
