Is my bearded dragon okay laying in water with its ear submerged?

Hello. Lewis should always have a bowl of clean water available. The amount of humidity contributed by a bowl of water is negligible if the remainder of the enclosure is appropriate. Bearded dragons must stay hydrated or they are at risk for kidney disease and gout. If the enclosure is large enough, provide a bowl that Lewis can get his whole body into, or make sure to soak him for 15-20 minutes several times a week. Basically it could be an infection or a trauma, it sounds like she was in a great deal of pain, i would recommend taking her to a reptile vet as she might need an antibiotic course and some pain medications.

When soaking a bearded dragon to increase hydration, I recommend having a Tupperware container that is only used for Phantom (reptiles have the potential to shed Salmonella when they don't feel well, and we don't want to cross contaminate anything in your home). You also want to get a thermometer (a human one will work) to measure the temperature of the water. Ideally it will be 90F for soaking. It can be chin deep, as long as Phantom can hold his head up. if you are doing this for maintenance (i.e. he is not sick), you can soak twice weekly for 15-20 minutes. If you are doing this because Phantom is sick or dehydrated, then I would recommend soaking him twice daily for 15-20 minutes. I personally don't utilize Pedialyte for soaking bearded dragons, as it can get quite sticky and sometimes they don't like the taste of it. Often they will drink while in their baths, and after that will urinate and defecate. I hope that helps to answer your question, and good luck!

I would consider putting her in the bath tub with an inch or so if water and then slowly drizzle some water over her head. Don’t do too much at a time or for too long because we don’t want to drown her. Be patient and take your time . Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for reaching out about Amelia. The question is did she flip on her back and unable to correct due to a slippery surface or water cooled or is she actually sick? As long as Chopper wasn't under for long and you have used a towel to dry his ears, he should be ok. Just keep an eye out for signs of an ear infection which include shaking the head, discharge, and scratching at the ears. If you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet.

Give him some time to settle down. If the heavy breathing persists or if you hear wheezing, popping or see discharge from his nose or mouth then have him examined by an experienced herp veterinarian. If possible, contact your friend and ask if Draco has ever exhibited this behavior in the past. He could be stressed to begin with at the absence of his owner.
