What happens if I don't clean my aquarium filter for a month?

How frequently to change the filter depends on what type of filter you have. There are mesh filters that filter large particles of uneaten food, feces, etc. - these often just need to be rinsed to remove the material and that is it. If they get damaged in any way, that is when they need to be replaced. Other filters that remove toxins - often carbon filters or ammonia filters, have a set time frame that they should be changed with. This time frame is often set by the manufacturer, and usually ranges between 1-3 months, but you can look at the package or talk to the pet store where you purchased it for more guidance. The biological filter, which is made up of a surface for bacteria to live on, usually don’t need a great deal of cleaning as you can kill all of the good bacteria. Fish tanks should be cleaned in stages, generally replacing 10-15% of the water at a time. There are times where a larger cleaning might be necessary, but removing the fish and changing too much of the water at once can be quite a shock and can be dangerous to the fish, so this should be saved for only extenuating circumstances. There should not be a significant amount of tartar or plaque build up in this time, so if you return to cleaning them when you get back, he should be just fine! You can buy an automatic feeder which you should set to about 3/4 of the normal feeding amount. There are fish that eat algae, you may want to put in an algae eating fish. If you have a working set up (reliable heat, filter and oxygenation) then you should not have to worry about ammonia. Change 1/3 of the water before you leave, check the filter, remove all mulch from the gravel, and the aquarium should be fine.

Yes, you can rinse filter media (the sponge) using tank water. This will preserve beneficial bacterial populations in the sponge. The plastic filter parts can be rinsed and scrubbed using tap water. Perform a partial water change, no more than 30% total volume, using conditioned water that is temperature matched. To limit algae overgrowth, do not overfeed, limit lighting to 8-10 hours daily and monitor water temp. If possible, turn up filter flow to get the water moving. Algae thrives in slow moving water. Do this only if your fish are not affected by stronger currents.

If the Betta tank is currently empty, I would suggest changing the gravel and cleaning it very well before putting another fish in it.
