How often should I cut my indoor cat's nails to keep them healthy?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The average dog needs their nails cut every 4-8 weeks. If the nails are clear, you can see how much nail extends beyond the pink "quick" - the triangular shaped blood supply that comes from the base of the nail. If the nail is longer than about a cm beyond the quick, it's ready to be cut back. If the nails are starting to get more of a point or tapered edge at the tip, then they're getting too long. However, this quick grows with the nail - so the longer the nails get, the less you will be able to cut them back. When in doubt, cut the nails once a month - and over time you'll get a feel for your specific dog's needs and if you can spread those nail trims out a bit. Hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for your question! You may buy nail small clippers found at your local pet supplies store to trim your cat's nails. If your cat is indoors, you may need to trim the nails every 8 weeks or so. You may ask your veterinarian to show you the proper way to do this. Outdoor cats do not need their nails trimmed very often is at all. Being outside and walking on ground and pavement helps to trim them down on their own. Alternatively, having cat scratch posts around your home if your cat is an indoor cat, can help to trim down their nails naturally. I hope this has helped!

No health concern here. Some cats just don't prefer to use scratch posts. Just keep in mnid that you will have to get his nails cut more frequently to keep them short, say once every 3-6 weeks, since he isn't filing them down with the scratch post. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Kittens' nails are really sharp and they keep scratching everything in the house ! You can clip the sharp very tip of the nails in the front legs with nail clippers. Just be careful not to clip in the pink part. Ivy should have her de-worming medication now (if she hasn't had it yet) and then again in 2 weeks time. She also should have her first vaccination when is is about 8-9 weeks old. Her second vaccination will be given 3-4 weeks after the first one. She looks like a happy, sweet kitten !

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I recommend spaying and neutering cats around 5-6 months of age. Declawing is amputation the of the last segment of their digit, like a knuckle in people. It is done with a blade or a laser which depends on the hospital. Most hospitals are getting away from declawing and are not offering it anymore. It is painful and behavioral issues (like inappropriate elimination) and chronic pain or even regrowth of the nail if not done appropriately has been seen. If you are going to declaw then it should be done with the spay and neuter when they are young. Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For a German Shepherd I would say weekly to every couple of weeks should be good for a thorough brush out. The important thing is to make sure that Rusty is not being bathed more than every 3 - 4 weeks as frequent baths can cause skin irritation. As far as nail cutting, every 3 weeks is pretty standard. More frequent nail trims or dremel (every 1.5 - 2 weeks) may be needed if the nails are very long and you are trying to get the quicks shorter. For larger dogs, especially ones with black nails, I find that using a dremel is easier. However, some dogs don't like the noise, so you have to do what works for you and Rusty. Any Petsmart or Petco groomer should be able to cut Brooklyn's nails. You can also go to your vet's office and they can actually show you how to trim her nails.
