How to clean a fish tank effectively? Should I remove my fish?

If the Betta tank is currently empty, I would suggest changing the gravel and cleaning it very well before putting another fish in it. Make sure to change the water regularly as this is often the cause of issues with Betta fish. Best of luck!

If that goes well then extend it to 4 weeks to see how it goes. You can then decide how long you can let it go before cleaning. Best of luck!

If you are getting hard water deposits, use a utility razor and gently scrape the deposit off the glass. When you're doing a water change, if the water level drops below the deposits, use a cloth dampened with plain vinegar and scrub. Be careful to not allow any vinegar into the water. Wipe it well with a clean cloth to remove any vinegar residue and refill. Ideally, the tank should be emptied, sprayed with vinegar, sit for 10-20 minutes then scrubbed or scraped.

How frequently to change the filter depends on what type of filter you have. There are mesh filters that filter large particles of uneaten food, feces, etc. - these often just need to be rinsed to remove the material and that is it. If they get damaged in any way, that is when they need to be replaced. Other filters that remove toxins - often carbon filters or ammonia filters, have a set time frame that they should be changed with. This time frame is often set by the manufacturer, and usually ranges between 1-3 months, but you can look at the package or talk to the pet store where you purchased it for more guidance. The biological filter, which is made up of a surface for bacteria to live on, usually don’t need a great deal of cleaning as you can kill all of the good bacteria. Begin your preparation for the move a week or so before the day itself, by removing ornaments and other obstacles from within the tank. Each day leading up to the move, perform a 15-20% water change, so that by the time you are ready to move, the tank water will be clean but also stable and mature. On the day itself, preserve as much of the original tank water as possible, to re-introduce into the tank at the other end. The best way to transport your fish is within thick bags, like the ones pet shops provide when you buy new fish. Make sure that the top of the bag is well sealed to prevent spillages. Store the bags containing your fish in a sturdy box, padded with polystyrene or other filled bags to keep the bags secure and upright. Cover the box, as darkness helps to reduce stress in your fish, then secure the box safely within your vehicle. Since your journey is more than a couple of hours long then you may need to arrange for a rest stop to re-open the bags and allow oxygen to enter. Once you've arrived, get the tank set up and watered, with all of the filters and air pumps running, and allow at least half an hour for the tank to settle. You will probably need to add more water to the tank, but try to keep this to a minimum and use as much of the original water as possible. Finally, introduce your fish to the tank in the same manner as you would if bringing them home for the first time, by floating the bags with the lights off, allowing the temperature to stabilize, and gradually mixing tank water with the bag water before releasing your fish. If it is on the glass, remove enough water to drop levels below the lotion and wipe with paper towels until clean. Avoid soaps or cleaners which can cause more harm to your fish than the lotion. Replace water with aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent further stress or shock. Use a fresh carbon filter insert to remove any residual lotion or chemicals. If the lotion is on tank furniture, remove and wash with a mild soap then rinse very well before returning it to the tank.

Yes, you can rinse filter media (the sponge) using tank water. This will preserve beneficial bacterial populations in the sponge. The plastic filter parts can be rinsed and scrubbed using tap water. Perform a partial water change, no more than 30% total volume, using conditioned water that is temperature matched. To limit algae overgrowth, do not overfeed, limit lighting to 8-10 hours daily and monitor water temp. If possible, turn up filter flow to get the water moving. Algae thrives in slow moving water. Do this only if your fish are not affected by stronger currents.
