Does Zylkene for dog anxiety cause tolerance or work right away?

Hi there. Yes, in general, Zylkene is a good choice for a natural calming supplement for dogs with anxiety. However, I would also say that if his anxiety is severe, it's unlikely that a natural supplement alone will make a significant difference. If you didn't feel that the fluoxetine worked well for him, I would suggest talking to your vet about trying a different medication - just as in humans, it often takes some trial and error to find the best choice for each individual patient. Some other daily meds that could be considered would include sertraline, paroxetine, clomipramine, trazodone, or clonidine.

It is possible Petey has built up a tolerance to Trazodone. This can happen if used long term. Discuss an increase with your veterinarian. Consider also desensitization therapy and a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, to further help decrease anxiety.

Hello. Much depends on what is the underlying cause of your pets anxiety. Noise phobias can sometimes respond to gradual conditioning to that noise. Training & training tools & toys can sometimes help with separation anxiety. Often, we turn to pharmaceuticals & supplements. I always recommend OTC products like Zylkene or Composure. These are natural supplements that contain ingredients that are not harsh or dangerous. CBD may help with anxiety, but you need to be sure the company you use has scientifically formulated their products to be sound. Prescription medications are often used, as needed or for help with behavior modification. Sileo, Trazodone, acepromazine & anti-anxiety medications like Prozac have all been utilized, but you will need to work with your veterinarian on these. Benadryl can definitely cause drowsiness in some dogs, but this tends to be dose-dependent, meaning the higher the dose, the more likely a dog is to become drowsy. Some dogs are not very affected, though. We do not typically see a tolerance built up. The dose range is pretty wide, though, and Benadryl can be safely given up to 4 times per day. Depending on the reason that Kiwi is taking the Benadryl, I recommend consulting with your vet to see what dose & frequency they recommend. I hope this is helpful!

Poor Zora! She does sound like a very anxious girl. If you would like to try a natural calming supplement of some kind, I would suggest Zylkene or Composure - both of these are very safe, and I have seen good results with them in some patients. You could also try a DAP pheromone collar as well, to see if this helps :)

I am sorry to hear about Max. Lexapro is not a drug we normally use in dogs so its safety and efficacy hasn't been evaluated and I would not recommend giving this drug. The drug also requires several weeks of use before effects are truly seen so it would not help you now.
