My dog's Trazodone for anxiety isn't working. Has he built tolerance?

Yes, Trazodone is an anti-anxiety medication used in dogs pretty regularly. There are also other anti-anxiety medications that can be used if Trazodone does not seem to help Precious's unique situation, so keep the lines of communication open. I hope that this works however. Trazodone has a wide dosage range, so it's certainly possible that you may have room to safely increase Cupid's dose - however, you should never make any changes to the dosage of a prescription medication without talking to the veterinarian who prescribed it. So I would suggest calling Cupid's regular veterinarian to talk about your concerns. He/she may recommend increasing the trazodone dose, or may suggest switching to a different medication altogether such as gabapentin or Sileo. A training plan to help Cupid learn to stand calmly for grooming would also be helpful, since there's only so much that we can accomplish with medication alone. Yes, trazodone is often given daily to help with anxiety. There are many options however. The most common medication for separation anxiety is Fluoxetine. It's generally my first choice when I'm looking for a daily medication. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Also, medication by it's self is not likely to work. Hi there. I would be concerned with Hershey developing serotonin syndrome with concurrent use of trazadone and fluoxetine especially if you are giving them together often. It has to do with how the drugs are metabolized in the body and what receptors they work on. Side effects can be as you have listed, as with diarrhea, labored fast breathing, etc. I would try calling your doctor to discuss changing the dosages or weaning off the trazadone altogether. Hyperactivity can be a side effect of Trazodone. Here is an information sheet about this drug and list of the side effects.
