Is Zesty Paws safe for my dog taking Reconcile for paw licking?

Poor Zora! She does sound like a very anxious girl. If you would like to try a natural calming supplement of some kind, I would suggest Zylkene or Composure - both of these are very safe, and I have seen good results with them in some patients. You could also try a DAP pheromone collar as well, to see if this helps :)

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I would put her on a Glucosamine AND Omega 3 fish oils. I like Dasquinn treats and for fish oils I prefer VRS Omega Benefits but it is a liquid. Otherwise try Nordic naturals. The best option now would be to place an e-collar (cone) on Starla to prevent any more licking. Be sure the collar extends at least 2 inches past her nose in order to be effective. Ideally, she should be seen by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat the underlying cause. Causes may include allergies, pain, infection, trauma, boredom or anxiety. Licorice root is said to have anti inflammatory properties and can be used topically or orally. Anything you apply topically will likely be licked off unless she has a cone in place. Licorice root should not be given to dogs with kidney disease, heart disease or hypertension (high blood pressure).

Licking and chewing of the paws is a sign of allergies and it can become an infection (pododermatitis) which can be caused by bacteria and yeast. I have success treating with an antibiotic and an antifungal for 3 weeks. I also start my patients on apoquel and an antihistamine to control the licking and biting. I would also recommend considering changing her diet. Chicken is the most common allergic protein. You can find over the counter diets with venison, duck or fish. She can no have any treats that aren't made out of the protein or table scraps. You have to give the diet 2-3 months. Sometimes the pet needs a prescription diet. Benadryl doesn’t usually make dogs very sleepy, but you could try it. I would do your best to keep the paw covered or have her wear the cone while you give her lots of reassurance. It can take a few days for them to adapt to the change in sight and hearing while wearing the cone, but after that they should go on like normal. I would also talk to your vet about other sedative options to be used as needed.

To treathe feet you apply a small amount to the affected area on her feet and rub it into the skin. This is usually done twice a day, or follow the directions on the label. They are safe medications but they are not made to injest. I recommend using a cone until the lesions are healed so she can’t lick her feet. Dogs don’t like the cone at first but they learn to eat, drink and sleep with it on. The feet will heal much more quickly if you prevent licking.
