My dog had surgery. Can I give Benadryl with other meds for licking?

Benadryl is fine and safe to give however if she isn’t calmer out of her kennel you can let out when you are there to supervise her. As long as she is. It running around playing fetch and chasing things or jumping up and down a bunch, then she will be fine. Benadryl can be given twice a day safely and 25 mg is appropriate

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could certainly be allergies. In reality, Benadryl probably would not help much in this case. Medications to decrease the itch that could help him include prednisone or a medication called Apoquel. The possible secondary infection would have to be treated as well. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Poor Knox. I am so sorry he is going through that. What exactly is happening at night that is harder for him? I would not add Benadryl to the mix. It sounds like he is on some good pain control medications. Make sure that he is eating small more frequent amounts rather than just two big meals and that it's something more blend for him as he's recovering. If you feel so he is not doing well at night, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning or take him to the ER if you do feel as though he is in pain. It's common for them to still be somewhat disoriented from the anesthesia the evening of the surgery. I do not recommend giving the Benadryl, because it may be dangerous in his case and likely won't be helpful. He will eventually sleep and start to act more normally this evening. If he is not acting mostly normal by the same time tomorrow, then I would recommend calling your vet. I hope that helps and all is well with Liam.

I would also wash him in warm water and Dawn dish soap to get rid of the ants, and you can make a home soothing salve to help with the bites from the ants if he has them using baking soda and water. Typically I recommend an anti-histamine like Benadryl or a pet formulate NSAID (such as Rimadyl(Carprofen) or Meloxicam) to help with potential pain at the incision site. It isn't advised to place anything directly on the incision as this can seep through the incision lining and cause infection. I would also recommend keeping an e-collar (cone) on your pet to prevent licking and scratching at the area that can lead to opening of the incision and infection as well. If there are obvious bumps or open lesions on the skin then this should also be treated with an antibiotic (oral) prescribed by your vet.

You can try using the Bendryl on Pele. Give it an hour to take effect. If this doesn't work (not all dogs get sedated on it), then contact Pele's vet who will have stronger meds that will work better. Many dogs HATE having their nails done so this method is commonly used. Best of luck with Pele!
