My dog is licking her red paw. How can licorice root help?

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking. You can soak the paw in an Epsom salt foot bath for 10-15 minutes daily. Make sure the paw is completely dry afterwards. A soak in diluted chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) may also provide some relief.

Poor pup! If Princess is licking her paws to the point that they are bleeding, this is definitely not normal. The most common cause of excessive licking or chewing of the paws is an allergy problem - either seasonal environmental allergies or food allergies can cause this. Other possibilities would include a bacterial or fungal skin infection in this area, or even skin mites (mange). I would recommend having Princess examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, I would recommend getting an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear to prevent her from continuing to lick her paws and make things worse.

If BoDeen is only licking one paw then he may have something between his toes that is causing a problem. I will usually recommend soaking the foot in Epsom Salts (following the instructions on the box for making it up) for 5 minutes then just drying it well. That can be repeated twice daily. You should also try to figure out a way to prevent him from licking at the foot and to protect it. From your picture I'm concerned about infection, and often oral antibiotics are recommended for skin infections. While you're waiting to see your veterinarian the main thing you should do is try to prevent Lucy from licking, which will be easier said than done! Even though the hard plastic e-collars look sad, most of the time they are the best way to prevent licking. You could also try putting a dog bootie on her feet if you think she would leave it on.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.

It's hard to say if Spot started licking the paw because of allergies or a wound. Excessive licking of the paws can cause secondary trauma to the skin and pads. Pads can take 6-8 weeks to completely heal, so preventing licking and protecting the pad is the best treatment. If the skin between the toes is also affected, I would recommend having Spot examined by a a vet to determine if there is an active infection. Allergies can cause paw licking, but it is generally on 2 or 4 feet, so I think it is less likely in this case.

If it is allergies, she will need to get on some allergy medication. If it is related to arthritis pain, then obviously she will need pain medication to stop the licking. If it is anxiety related, then anxiety medication is needed. The vomiting is concerning and may or may not be related to the licking. Long story short, I’d recommend taking Dahlia in to vet to help determine the underlying cause and get started on the right treatment. In the mean time, you can apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream as long as you also have Dahlia wear an E-collar at all times. Best wishes to you and Dahlia.
