Why is my Yorkie yipping and has a purple lump after a haircut?

You don't mention exactly what the first growth was that was removed from the left side of his neck, but hopefully that was either benign, or perhaps not but was completely removed with the surgery. Lumps can appear anywhere on a dog, and they certainly seem to increase in frequency as dogs get older. I wouldn't panic, but yes, the 2 situations you've already suspected are possible, and I'll add a third: 1.) The groomer went too close with the clippers, and nicked him. 2.) This is a new growth, which may or may not be related to the first one (i.e. may be the same type or something completely different). 3.) The groomer could have nicked a growth with the clippers! It does sound like it's pretty nasty, and I tend to be fairly aggressive with wounds that may have happened at the groomers, since they can easily get infected. I would recommend getting Brody in to your vet today for evaluation, cleaning of the area, and possibly oral antibiotics.

I always recommend any new skin masses to be checked out by the veterinarian. Sometimes the doctor will know what it is by examining it. More often though, they need to collect a small sample of cells and look under the microscope. Especially concerning are pink/red masses as they can be a cancer called a Mast Cell Tumor (although other benign growths can look similar). It’s always better to be safe. I would not be overly concerned about this but continue to monitor closely for any further increase in size or change in colour. Many small wounds, cysts and blocked glands will develop into small, firm noduels and most will harden and shrink down uneventfully. Any changes should be assessed by your vet however

This could be a cyst, an infection, plaque or even a skin tumor like a melanoma. Masses that grow suddenly, change in color/size/are painful are more concerning than those that do not change. The only way to know for sure what this mass is would be for your veterinarian to do an exam and potentially biopsy it. I do not recommend applying any ointment or other medication yet as it could be harmful depending on what it is.

A common cause for such lumps is anal gland impaction or abscess but tumours are a potentially rare cause. Your vet can check and empty the glands or advise further investigation as appropriate. If related to impacted gland, a fiber supplement can help prevent repeated issues

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Philly. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. The lump is bothering him if he is trying to get to it. It appears large and quite swollen. It is difficult to see from the photos, but it looks like there is an open area in the middle. If so, this could be a breathing hole for a fly larva known as a cuterebra. If not, he could have an infection or even skin cancer. The veterinarian will examine him and determine how best to treat him. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him if he is licking at it.
