Why does my Yorkie have a hard, black, itchy spot on his neck?

It has the appearance of a sebaceous cyst or mass, however without a physical exam this cannot be confirmed. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge or discomfort associated with the lump. Place an e-collar (cone) on SP if he is able to lick or chew the area. Following up with your veterinarian next week is a good idea if you have any additional concerns.

It looks like that might be sebaceous cyst with some dried sebaceous debris. I don't think you need too concerned, but it would be good to get it checked out next time your at the vet. I am so sorry to hear that Jacob is having trouble with his skin. Though it is difficult to know the initial cause it now looks from the pictures you have provided that Jacob has a case of moist dermatitis or "hot spot". Hot spots can be very difficult to heal, and take a long time. These spots are often started by something else, for a console fleas, skin allergies, mites, and as Jacob bites and scratches at the sea he causes tissue damage and introduces infection. The keys to a successful healing process are; Treating the underlying cause- for example fleas clipped area around the sore Cleaning the sore with a vet prescribed antiseptic Leaving the sore open to dry out (as the moisture promotes bacterial growth) Antibacterial/ hydrocortisone spray prescribed from the vet for healing An e-collar to prevent Jacob from scratching or biting at the hot spot and making it worse Measure the hot spot with a ruler, and compare in a few days time to make sure that it is reducing in size. If you feel like Jacob is not healing well, I would suggest a trip to the vet, for the above prescription medications. Oral antibiotics and/ or a steroid injection may help to jumpstart the healing process. I know hot spots can be very frustrating for you as a pet parent and for Jacob. I would not be overly concerned about this but continue to monitor closely for any further increase in size or change in colour. Many small wounds, cysts and blocked glands will develop into small, firm noduels and most will harden and shrink down uneventfully. Any changes should be assessed by your vet however

Small bumps that come and go could indicate an allergic reaction. The reaction could be related to bug bites, food allergies but it could also be related to a skin cancer called a Mast Cell Tumor. I recommend to have Gypsy examined to be safe. I hope this helps.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Underlying allergy can predispose to skin infection. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. This looks like a tumor with necrosis. without a hands-on exam , however it is not possible to tell exactly. This may also be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.
