Is it safe for my puppy's first professional grooming after shots?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 4 days old

My dog had his last vaccination over a week ago and I have booked him in for his first professional grooming today but I just wanted to double check that it's okay for him to go as I've read you should wait 2 weeks after the second vaccination before letting them be groomed. The nurse said he could go out on walks a week after his vaccination which was last Friday so I don't see why he'd need to wait

7-10days after final vaccination should be ok as long as he will be kenneled individually and not mixing closely with the other dogs in to be groomed. Check with the groomers what their individual policy is

Your vet is correct. It is not a good idea to take your puppy to a groomer before it has had at least a second round of vaccines, even better after the third round. Your puppy will only have a general immunity to diseases after the first shots. The second round of shots is what makes a specific disease provided maternal antibodies was not present at the first round ( this is why we give a third round as sometimes the first round does not work due to maternal antibodies rendering the vaccine useless). So if you take your puppy to a place frequented by many dogs, it could be infected with parvo, kennel cough and other terrible puppy diseases.
If her hair is too long now, you can cut some of it off with scissors. By the time your puppy had its second and third shots, the groomer can then remedy any beauty-issues.

I really would not take him in for a bath and nail clipping until he has had all his vaccinations (3 courses plus rabies). There is too great a danger that he picks up a disease while he is not protected by vaccines yet.
