Best VOHC dental stick for senior Maltese with allergies? Greenies?

Generally most dental sticks including greenies are not recommended for dogs with IBD. the only one i can recommend is Virbac C.E.T. VeggieDent Chews, it's hypoallergenic and Jemma night do better on those.

HI, thanks for using Petcoach! I am sorry Ziggy is sick! Sadly there isn't a perfect treat to keep a dogs teeth clean. Veterinary dentists recommend brushing their teeth AT LEAST three times per week. Anything less isn't doing anything. If Ziggy has a lot of tartar build up already then it is best to have an anesthetic (put under) dental to have his teeth cleaned, X-rayed and extracted if infected. Then brushing his teeth 3 or more times per week will hopefully keep the tartar away. Below is a link to the Veterinary Oral Health Councils recommend products. My own preference, and what I use for my dog, is C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews (by Virbac). These chews, in conjunction with daily brushing, keep his teeth clean and his breath fresh. Be sure that any chew or dental product you choose has the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) Seal of Approval on the package.

As far as her teeth go, it is always recommended to have a full dental cleaning under anesthesia to resolve any underlying problems and pain, then follow up with something like a water additive to decrease additional dental calculus from forming. My favorite dental product is PetSmile, but it does need to be applied to the teeth. https://petsmileusa.com There has been a lot of evidence that increasing the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet can make a big difference for inflammation and itching. Since a diet change and adding Omega 3 fatty acids to the diet can both cause loose stool, I normally only recommend that clients make one change to a diet at a time (which includes supplements). Both Acana and Wellness make a wonderful fish based diet, so I do not have a preference between the 2 of those. Make sure you do a gradual diet change over a period of days to prevent any GI upset and loose stools. The best method to keep her teeth in shape would be to brush her teeth at least every other day after having the teeth cleaned professionally at your veterinarian's office (under anesthesia). Yorkies are notorious for extremely bad teeth, so chewies will not do the job. Once the teeth are shiny bright and white after the professional cleaning , it is easy to just apply the enzymatic tooth paste on your dog's teeth and then brush , or not even brush as the enzymes will remove the bacterial film on the teeth.

Yes absolutely! I highly recommend the Virbac dental chews that are almost half the price as the Oravet, and they really do work! I use these on my own pets.
