You can get an enzymatic doggie tooth paste from your veterinarian which only needs to be applied to the teeth and does not need brushing. Once tartar is on the teeth this will likely not be removed by any tooth paste. You can also let him chew some Greenies which helps also. Yorkies notoriously have bad teeth, so they do need regular cleaning and also dental cleaning at the vet's office.

HI, thanks for using Petcoach! I am sorry Ziggy is sick! Sadly there isn't a perfect treat to keep a dogs teeth clean. Veterinary dentists recommend brushing their teeth AT LEAST three times per week. Anything less isn't doing anything. If Ziggy has a lot of tartar build up already then it is best to have an anesthetic (put under) dental to have his teeth cleaned, X-rayed and extracted if infected. If Sha Sha isn't interested in the chews, switching to other toys such as a Kong that needs to be chewed on to get a treat, or even brushing the teeth with a dog toothbrush and dog-safe toothpaste can help keep the teeth clean. There are also additives that can be sprayed in the mouth or added to the water to help reduce buildup (look for a VOHC seal on these products to know it is veterinary approved). You may also want to try out multiple different brands of dental chews to see if there is one she will eventually eat and chew on as they come in a wide range of choices such as rawhide-like chews, to more bone-like ones.

I would try her on a dry food for small dogs. The pieces are small and easier to chew than the dental diet, and usually tastier also. There are several excellent small breed foods now so check out ones that are available in your area. Giving some caned with the dry food is fine. Small breed dogs tend to be prone to dental disease. They need the teeth cleaned at least once a year by the veterinarian in order to maintain good oral health. At home, brushing the teeth with dog tooth paste every day can help. Special dog foods, treats and toys can help but they don’t help clean the front of the mouth as pets don’t use that to chew. Even with this action, she will still need her teeth professionally cleaned. Better to get this taken care of soon. Once the damage is done to the teeth, it’s permanent. He will need a veterinary exam and likely a professional dental cleaning first before any brushing his teeth at home will help prevent or slow down tartar accumulation on his teeth. There are lots of good options, so try a few out and see what flavors Teddy likes, but I recommend an enzymatic toothpaste.
