Is it possible for my vaccinated dog to still get parvovirus?

They should be fine. Since they have been vaccinated for parvovirus they are protected. Generally unvaccinated puppies are at high risk, adult dogs don't get it as often, especially those that are vaccinated. Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. In theory, she has not mount a response to her vaccines yet so she can still get infected with like parvovirus if those feces were infected with parvovirus. However, that is very unlikely so I would not worry about that too much as the chance of that is very small. Good luck and have a great day! She is likely going to be just fine.

Hello, parvo is generally a disease of young unvaccinated dogs and older dogs whom are vaccinated very rarely contract the disease. You should clean his environment daily with a dilute bleach solution to reduce the contamination of parvo, especially where Bella used to sleep and places where she may have had diarrhea. Ideally, keep King away from those areas at least until you have cleaned them. If King does contract parvo, which again is highly unlikely, he is most likely to have a very mild form of it due to his vaccinations. Monitor him for any vomiting, diarrhea, or a decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if you do not any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.

There is less risk for an adult fully vaccinated dog to develop parvovirus, but it can be a very hardy virus and live for a long time on clothing or shoes. To be safe I would change clothes after coming in contact with the puppy and wash hands thoroughly. You can clean shoes in a mixture of bleach and water (1:32).

Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The short answer is yes. You can bring the virus into your home on your clothes, shoes, or skin. It doesn’t take a lot of the virus to infect a dog. It also takes a couple of weeks to incubate the virus in the intestines so it’s not something that would show up right away. If you are concerned Coco has parvo, I would take her to a vet right away. They can test for the virus at the hospital. I would also recommend vaccinating for parvo if she is negative and not showing signs so she doesn’t get it. Good luck and kisses to Coco!
