My unvaccinated puppy scratched me. Is a rabies shot needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Malinois | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 8 days old

i got scratched by our dog's teeth but there is no bleeding and my skin didn't break but it become swollen for hours. our pet dog hasnt get his vaccine updated yet. he is just 4 months old but a stray dog always come near him. do i still need to get an anti-rabies shot? thanks

Hello. No, you do not need to worry about rabies, but you may need to see your own physician about your scratch if it remains swollen. Max is definitely old enough to receive his rabies shot. Other than this, just watch Max for the next 10 days. If he should become sick or act unwell in any way during this 10 day period, please see your vet immediately for further recommendations. No you are fine. I'm glad you have had Apollo vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is spread from infected animals primarily by biting as the virus is in the saliva. The animals appear sick, disoriented and sometime drool as they lose the ability to swallow. Rabies is a fatal disease for animals and people that is why rabies vaccinations are so important. Hello, and thanks for your question. As a vet, I cannot give human medical advice, but the likelihood of your puppy having rabies is extraordinarily small, if she seems otherwise healthy. My level of alarm would not be very high, but if you’re worried I recommend you consult with your doctor.

IF Luna begins to act strange and dies in the next 10 days, then you could have her tested for rabies, for peace of mind.

Sounds like you performed first aide to your wounds well, but if your scratch marks do not heal or worsen, then yes please see your MD. You need to speak to a human physician regarding YOUR health. If Bini doesn't show any signs of rabies 10 days after she scratched you then you did not get rabies from that incident. She is out of the woods on having rabies 6 months from the vaccine. I wish you the best!

My unvaccinated stray dog bit me 10 days ago. Do I need rabies shots?

There is a usually a 10 day quarantine period after an animal breaks the skin of a person. If the animal has rabies in it's saliva - it show signs of rabies within 10 days. This doesn't not mean that the animal doesn't have rabies- just that it couldn't have transmitted it at the time of the bite. Rabies can have a long incubation period. Rabies should be taken very seriously because it is a fatal virus. I would recommend getting Tofy vaccinated as soon as possible. I would recommend consulting with a local veterinarian on what happened and have an exam done on Tofy. They can give you the necessary information. I would recommend that you do, especially if you are in an area that has a high incidence of rabies. That being said, I am not a human doctor and you should be consulting with your personal doctor. It always better to err on the side of caution in these cases since rabies is a 99.99% fatal disease. As for Eva, you need to get her rabies vaccination done as soon as possible. Best wishes.

The doctor will be able to treat your son based on the rabies law and treatment protocol in your area, and your vet will be able to advise you on proper treatment protocol for Rubal. Please also make sure that you always keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations, since rabies is relatively common in India and is deadly to humans and other mammals.

My 3-month-old puppy bit me. Do I need a tetanus or rabies shot?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your puppy. The answer to this question will depend on the circumstances. If this is a puppy you do not know/a stray/from an uknown home then I would recommend contacting your human physician. If this is your puppy who has been in your care with no exposure to wildlife and who is acting normally/healthy then the concern for rabies is very low but it does look like there is a puncture in your skin so I would recommend consulting your human doctor as we can develop bacterial infections due to dog bites and your doctor can advise you if treatment is necessary.
