My child was scratched by our unvaccinated dog. Is rabies a risk?

Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm wondering if the rabies vaccine product or protocol is a bit different in India vs the United States. Our typical protocol with a previously vaccinated (up-to-date) dog who may have been exposed to a rabid animal (such as a wild animal or unvaccinated dog) is to booster the dog immediately with another rabies vaccine - just once....and then get back on the standard vaccine schedule of every 3 years. We don't typically do the multi-dose PEP you're describing, although that protocol would be given to people with exposure. However, rabies is much more endemic in your area - so I would defer to the advice of your local vet who treats far more rabies exposure cases than we would. If the original plan (prior to your dog's second altercation with another stray) was to give the two additional shots on the 4th and 5th, then I would probably stick with this plan. All vaccines can carry a small risk of reaction - but there's no "overdose" per say. And any risk of vaccine reaction is negligible compared to the risk of actual rabies exposure, in a rabies endemic area. So it is always best to err on the side of protection from rabies. I would recommend that you do, especially if you are in an area that has a high incidence of rabies. That being said, I am not a human doctor and you should be consulting with your personal doctor. Hello. No, you do not need to worry about rabies, but you may need to see your own physician about your scratch if it remains swollen. Max is definitely old enough to receive his rabies shot. You need to speak to a human physician regarding YOUR health. If Bini doesn't show any signs of rabies 10 days after she scratched you then you did not get rabies from that incident. She is out of the woods on having rabies 6 months from the vaccine. I wish you the best!

Rabies is very common in the united states. Any patient that has Rabies will pass away with in 10 days. The likeliness that a dog in the vet clinic had Rabies is very very rare. However you son will not get Rabies or should be concerned about getting Rabies with this type of exposure. Hope that helps- thanks for using pet coach

If you are from the UK you have nothing to worry regarding to rabies as the UK is a rabies free country, if you are from India for example then the answer is yes, you need to go to the hospital and get a rabies injection.
