My unneutered dog leaks dark fluid from penis while sleeping. Why?

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

Hello, sorry to hear about Oscar. He could have an infection of his prepuce or penis. Additionally, he could have a UTI or urinary stones. Ideally, he should be examined by his veterinarian so that they can evaluate his penis, prepuce and look for evidence of stones or a UTI. Look for straining to urinate, persistent blood in urine, and leaking urine. If you note any of these, then have Oscar evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

No one knows if dogs have "wet dreams" per se, however, it is not uncommon for dogs to ejaculate even when they sleep. I would not be worried about this behavior. The best way to fix this is to have them neutered before they start displaying other sexual behaviors.

Unneutered male dogs will masturbate and have discharge from the penis on occasion. This is normal as long as his penis does not stay exposed from it's sheath for longer than an hour or so. If it stays out too long it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet. If you do not like this behavior you can have him neutered which will probably help.

Dylan's prepuce is very swollen and appears infected and shows a lesion. This can happen if he licks it a lot, bacterial infection can cause that and also a type of venereal cancer called Canine transmissible venereal tumor or Sticker sarcoma. I suggest you make and appointment with your vet to have your dog's external genitalia examined. Depending on the findings your vet may prescribe antibiotics or an ointment for treatment of the condition. In the meantime, if you have an e-collar, put it on Dylan to keep him from licking, as this will only make it worse.

This could be caused by urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI), but is less likely to occur in males and more in females. JD could have a back problem or other neurological condition leading to decreased urethral closure pressure. I would recommend a trial of a medication called PPA or DES and see if the trial helps reduce the urinary incontinence. If there is no improvement after the trial, I would recommend more diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasound, x-rays or CT scan with contrast. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Are you sure that the bed isn't wet form him licking his penis? If he has an infection of his prepuce or penis he may lick a lot. I would have a Vet examine the skin of the prepuce and see if there is an infection. We treat with antibiotics and prepuce flushing. I hope this helps and I wish Mars the best!
