How can I effectively treat my dog's hookworms using at-home methods?

For your dog, pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole would be effective to treat hookworms - both of these can be purchased over the counter at most pet stores. I would treat twice for 3 days, 4 weeks apart and retest Maximiliano's stool 4 weeks after the 2 round. I would also put him on a monthly heart worm preventative as the medication also deworms the dog monthly. To prevent reinfection and ground contamination you should walk him on a leash and immediately pick up all stools and discard them. Do not let children play in contaminated areas. They should always where shoes outdoors. Strict hygiene and hand washing. I can certainly understand being frustrated with this problem! Drontal, in my experience, is a great deworming treatment, and it often takes at least two treatments to kill all the worms. That's because the first treatment kills the adult worms already present, and the second kills the ones who had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Preventing worms does require treatment with a deworming medication every three months, and each dog in the house should be treated to prevent reinfection. I would recommend giving all the dogs in your home Drontal, and giving them this treatment every three months. You can also give them Panacur instead of Drontal, it's a good deworming treatment that works well in my experience.

From your description, it sounds most likely that Hummer has hookworms, but roundworms are also possible. While it would be ideal to have a stool sample analyzed by his vet to determine if any other parasites are present as well (many can only be seen microscopically), there are a number of dewormers available over the counter to treat both roundworms and hookworms. Dewormers containing either pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole are generally effective against these parasites as long as you are dosing for Hummer's current body weight. Be sure to repeat the dose in 3 weeks. Clean up your yard well after each bowel movement to prevent Hummer from becoming reinfected with these worms. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Hookworms and whipworms cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, a decrease in appetite, low energy, an enlarged belly, and a dull coat. They need to be treated with a deworming medication. I typically recommend Panacur or Drontal, both of which you can get at your vet. I hope this helps!

Pretty severe if you can see worms in Emma's stool. I recommend giving her Panacur, which is an OTC deworming treatment. She will need another deworming treatment two weeks after the first treatment to make sure all the worms are killed. She will need deworming treatments every three months after that.
