I see worms in my dog's poop. Is it a serious hookworm infection?

Great question! I would get Ginger an OTC treatment now. You can give her Panacur, it's an excellent dewormer that kills roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It's a three day course of treatment and you will need to give her a second round of it two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. She should then be dewormed monthly until six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. I hope this helps :-)

I can certainly understand being frustrated with this problem! Drontal, in my experience, is a great deworming treatment, and it often takes at least two treatments to kill all the worms. That's because the first treatment kills the adult worms already present, and the second kills the ones who had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Preventing worms does require treatment with a deworming medication every three months, and each dog in the house should be treated to prevent reinfection. I would recommend giving all the dogs in your home Drontal, and giving them this treatment every three months. You can also give them Panacur instead of Drontal, it's a good deworming treatment that works well in my experience.

Fortunately, hookworms are relatively easy to treat with either fenbendazole (such as Panacur) or pyrantel pamoate (such as Nemex) based deworming medications, all of which are available over the counter. Be sure to clean up after each of Malaki's bowel movements to prevent reinfection. You may need to treat Malaki twice, but three weeks apart to assure that all parasites were killed. The worms in Herbie's vomit indicate he does have intestinal worms. You often don't see worms in the poop unless there is a very heavy infestation of them. The eggs are what are deposited in the feces, and those can only be seen with a microscope. Herbie needs a deworming treatment, and I recommend Panacur which you can get OTC. He will need another deworming treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms, and then will need one once a month until he is six months old. After that, he will need a deworming treatment every three months.

From your description, it sounds most likely that Hummer has hookworms, but roundworms are also possible. While it would be ideal to have a stool sample analyzed by his vet to determine if any other parasites are present as well (many can only be seen microscopically), there are a number of dewormers available over the counter to treat both roundworms and hookworms.
