Is it safe to travel with my blind dog learning a new environment?

Hi, I think if you find someone that looks after her well and loves perhaps it would be less traumatic for her to stay in the Caribbean. I am pro travelling with pets but I think Lucy suffered a lot and it’s a long journey and stay in kennel. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I would recommend acclimatizing them to their travel crate daily and start on a calming supplement or royal canin food 10-14days before travel and continue for at least 10-14days after. No dog should be expected to tolerate kicking or pulling of tails or ears and it is important to teach children safety and respectful handling of dogs. Crate the dogs unless directly supervised when young children are present

The safety of flying with pets varies widely depending on an individual pet’s temperament, anxiety level and underlying health issues, as well as the duration of the flight and temperature both at the destination and departure location. Generally speaking, most pets do not make the best travel companions while flying, as they can become very anxious with the hustle and bustle of the terminal, loud noises on the airplane and handling during security checkpoints. Anxious pets are more likely to become destructive, vocal or have accidents. Larger pets need to travel in crates in the baggage compartment of the plane, where they are unsupervised and may be exposed to extreme temperatures for potentially prolonged periods of time while waiting to be loaded or unloaded from the plane. In addition, most airlines require a veterinarian to sign off on the health of the pet before they can fly in cargo. When possible, most pets will be more comfortable and safer if left at home with a trusted friend or pet sitter or may travel better by car. If you must travel with your pet, be sure to pack a travel water bowl, extra food, a leash, travel litter pan, supply of medication and bags for cleanup. I'm sorry to hear this about Benny, but very glad to hear he was in good health when taken to the vet. I imagine Benny is feeling a little stressed and confused, he is still a young dog so is likely still finding his confidence in your 'pack'. With you guys being away travelling a lot his routine will have been messed up, from his point of view he doesn't really understand what is going on, all he knows is that he is being taken away from home to stay at different places. I would try and spend some really good quality time with him and reinforce his basic training to give him confidence. If possible it would be good if you could have someone take care of him in his own home rather than being taken to different places.

Poor Rusty! It's difficult to regulate their toilet time but I suggest feeding him earlier, a big meal in the morning then a small last meal no later than 4pm and a good bit of exercise before bed. I had a blind/deaf dog, they manage surprisingly well navigating. I advise to do a good tidy up so there is less clutter and obstacles. Try your best to keep furniture in the same places, and keep doors open. Be careful with temporary obstacles like vacuums and ironing tables etc. The car will not be as easy, so keep journeys to a minimum. If you do have to go you could try getting a crate with a blanket over it. You could ask the vet to prescribe a sedative such as acp or diazepam to use for essential journeys if you are desperate.
