My dog holds it! How to train an indoor-potty dog to go outside?

Belle should avoid areas where there may be unvaccinated dogs, but you will need to take her outside to potty train her and it may not go as well if you try to wait until she is fully vaccinated. Keep her on a leash and avoid contact with other dogs. Belle may get confused if there are pee pads indoors and she may use them. I doubt she will help Molly go outside but you could work on potty training the two of them together.

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. It's more likely that Coco Chanel she has not learned to go outside, and it's more convenient for her to use the pee pee pads. I would start moving her pee pee pads closer and closer to the door each day, and make sure she sees you moving them so she doesn't go to the usual spot and get confused. Then start moving them outside, eventually placing them in a spot outdoors where you want her to potty. Praise her when she uses the potty outside. As she starts to consistently use the potty outside, you can take away the pads. Be sure to reinforce her behavior with praise and treats.

She may have been trained to potty inside, you can try leaving out potty pads for her to go inside. She may also not be used to having to go potty in a busy, loud, or concrete-filled environment. Give her more time. Keep treats in your pocket and take her out often. Use a command like "go potty" and repeat it when you first get outside. When she does go outside, give her treats and LOTS of praise (people should be thinking you are a wackadoo!). Eventually she will figure out that going outside is a good thing that makes you very happy.

If you can't get her to go inside, you can take her outside and use a pad under her. Try to use an area with a hard surface as opposed to grass or soil in case she misses the pad. A hard surface is easier to decontaminate than grass or soil. After she is done, you can sanitize the surface using a diluted bleach solution. If she will go inside, use the pads and dispose of them accordingly afterwards.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It will take time to teach an older dog to go indoors. I would take the pad outside and put it on the ground. See if he will use it outside. If he poops and pees on it, bring it indoors and leave it there soiled for a little bit. So he can see it and smell the elimination. Use praise and treats when he uses the pad outdoors and then when he uses it indoors. Start with the pads close to the door to the outside and then gradually move it to your desired location. Use whatever phrase you use to encourage him to go "do your business," etc. Use a leash to let him sniff the pad. It will take tome to retrain him. Dogs like their routines. Be patient and positive! It can be confusing to train a puppy to go in the house (which is what using a pee pad really is) and also to do her business outside. She can certainly be out long enough to go in all types of weather. You can hold an umbrella over her if necessary.
