How to potty train puppy in cold/rainy weather: pads or outside?

If you can't get her to go inside, you can take her outside and use a pad under her. Try to use an area with a hard surface as opposed to grass or soil in case she misses the pad. A hard surface is easier to decontaminate than grass or soil. After she is done, you can sanitize the surface using a diluted bleach solution. If she will go inside, use the pads and dispose of them accordingly afterwards.

It will take several months to fully train Milo. Take him outside immediately after meals and first thing in the morning. Take him to an area that is specifically for potty and reward him with praise and a treat when he goes outside. You may want to consider using pee pads also inside during this cold time so he learns to go on them when it’s too cold rather than going wherever he wants in the house. Once it warms up and he’s older then you can be more strict about going outside. He’s a baby so don’t leave him outside alone and never for more than a few minutes at a time. Belle should avoid areas where there may be unvaccinated dogs, but you will need to take her outside to potty train her and it may not go as well if you try to wait until she is fully vaccinated. Keep her on a leash and avoid contact with other dogs. Belle may get confused if there are pee pads indoors and she may use them. I doubt she will help Molly go outside but you could work on potty training the two of them together.

I typically recommend taking them outside on a leash to get them used to it. You may have to go out frequently at first. Deuce is very young and it is not reasonable to expect him to go outside all the time (and he probably is too young to be leash trained). I'd recommend just taking him outdoors occasionally to get him used to the rain but not expecting him to urinate or defecate at this point.

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. What a frustrating issue. If they are already having accidents in the house on rainy days, I think putting down the pee pad occasionally won't make things worse. You'll need to put a bit of effort in to teaching them to use the pads - pay close attention to them when it's storming and lead them to the pad (probably on a leash or would be best) and reward them immediately with treats after they pee there. Additionally, clean any areas they have peed in the house with an enzymatic cleaner. I like Urine Away. This will help remove the smell so they are less likely to urinate there again. Congratulations on your new puppy! Approach potty pad training just as you would if she was going outside. Take her to the potty pad frequently (first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps and every 2-3 hours on top of those time). Give her a command such as "Go potty!" Then lots of praise and a small treat as soon as she goes. Clean up accidents with a carpet cleaner marketed for animal odor. If you catch her going, scoop her up and carry her to the potty pad.
