My rescue dog only listens for food. How do I train his bad habits?

It's a dog thing. Most dogs are incredibly food motivated. Start by trying to get Noble to do a command when you are just around the house or out for a walk. Give him lots of praise for performing the command. Continue using treats when you are in a training session. As he gets older, he will be less dependent on treats for positive reinforcement.

Consistency is key. I would also use treats and/or a clicker to elk with training. You could also get a training to come in just a couple of times to help pin point what is keeping him from listening. It sounds like he is young and probably has a lot of energy therefore, doesn’t want to listen and sit still. You can also try a calmin chew like composure or composure pro. Keep working on training everyday. I would try to take 10-20 minutes everyday to work on commands without any distractions. Use small chewy training treats so he doesn’t get distracted by the process it takes to chew up a large crunchy treat. I hope this helps.

Start being the person that feeds, walks and interacts with the dog on a regular basis. Carry treats with you and reward him when he stops barking at you, comes to you or does something you've asked him to, such as sit or down. You need to be the person that all good things come from until he is more open to your presence. His past may have been traumatic in some way that he associates with you and you'll have to be patient and kind to win him over. He may still prefer your wife's company, but hopefully you'll be able to convince him you're not so bad.

These are all completely normal behaviors for an untrained puppy :) You will need to teach CJ how to greet people and ask for attention politely - otherwise, he doesn't know what you want him to do. Keep him on-leash when he greets people so that you can prevent jumping up, and praise and reward him with treats for sitting nicely as they approach to say hi. Ask him to sit or do some other polite behavior to ask for something, rather than barking or whining - reward with a treat when he does. I would also recommend feeding the dogs in separate rooms or crates, then picking up the food bowls once they are finished - this will prevent him from being able to eat your other dog's food, and will ensure that the other dog has a chance to eat in peace.

This is a training/behavior issue. You can get him neutered to start. You will need to enforce the rules and reward him when he does well. If he jumps in the table, then he needs to stay in a kennel during that time until he learns what is expected. When he growls or bites it is important to stop and correct him right then so he understands. Make sure he has plenty of toys to bite and chew to help with boredom You may need to consult a training that can come to your house to help or talk to your vet about medication to help while he is in training.

Thank you for your question. There are some dogs that are very picky eaters, including mine. You can approach this a couple of different ways. You can decide to stick to one food and take the approach that Kimi will eat it when he is hungry. If you choose to do this, you need to avoid adding anything to the food, or he will simply wait until you add something to eat it. At his age, I would be comfortable letting him go 48 hours without eating before giving in and adding something to encourage him to eat. The second approach would be to recognize that he gets bored with his food and rotate through foods. You can find a brand with multiple flavors. Or you can change between brands. If you change between brands, I recommend adding some of the new food to the old food for a few days. Lastly, there are some dogs that only eat once a day, and if that is all he is interested in, that is okay too. He will eat when he is hungry, and as long as his weight is stable, and there are no other symptoms (such as vomiting or diarrhea), I wouldn't be concerned. For the barking, I recommend ignoring her when she barks. If she receives attention for this behavior it will continue. It can be tricking to work on behavior training a dog that is not particularly food motivated. You may need to find a treat that he really loves in order to motivate him: you could try freeze dried liver treats, cutting up pieces of refrigerated semi-soft dog food into small pieces, or very small pieces of cheese. Some dogs are more motivated by toys or play time, so you could also try giving him a favorite toy as a reward. You may also want to consider seeing a trainer for tips - puppy kindergarten and obedience classes can be very helpful!
