What's the healthy weight range for a 5-month-old Teddy Bear puppy?

Chihuahuas weight varies greatly during puppyhood and there is no specific weight chart that we use in practice. Instead we use a more accurate assessment of your puppy's weight, which is his/her body condition score (BCS) where 3/5 or 5/9 is considered an ideal weight. Your vet should be able to tell what the body condition score is easily by simply examining your pet. Also in puppies, unless you see vomiting or diarrhea symptoms, and they are getting feed the proper amount 3x a day, then chances are your pet is of proper weight. Also feel free to share a photo of your pet via consultation request, and we can tell you without a doubt whether your pup is proper weight or not.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 7kg is 15.4lbs which is rather hefty for a 7 month old Shitzu. Typically, Shitzu's when they are adults should weight between 8-15lbs. The Happy Dog Grain Free Food is good, but I would feed less perhaps. If there is a guide on the package as to how much to give, I would advise on following their recommendations. At 7 months, she should be less than 15lbs. As always, nothing can beat a hands on veterinarian exam. If you are concerned about her weight, having a veterinarian take a look at Hazal and accurately assess based on her body condition score, if she is truly overweight or not. I’m not sure about the UK but breeders associations like American Kennel Club want the ideal female beagle to be about 9-10kg. A 6 month old who is currently 7.5 kgs should achieve that by a year or so of age. That being said, I do see a huge number of beagles who are more like 15-17kgs which may make your Ziva girl look petite. But not to worry, if the vet says she checks out ok, her weight seems perfectly fine to me. Best wishes to you and Ziva!

Unfortunately that's hard to know exactly because he is a mixed breed. Mixed dogs can some grow larger than either parent. In general, small breed puppies reach adult height around 6-8 months of age so I suspect (as a guess) he may only grown another inch or two. He will gain weight and fill out until about 8-10 months of age. I suspect he may end up around 9-10lbs. This will depend though on which parent he takes after. Maltese tend to be light boned and thin where as Shih Tzu's tend to be heavier boned and have a stockier build. Again, know this is all a guess. Sometimes puppies can be late bloomers. Your veterinarian can get a better idea based upon Comet's bone structure. I hope this helps.

There is no easy answer to that question, as a dog's appropriate weight is not just based on their breed but their individual body size. If your dog's ribs are visible or very easily felt, then it may be that she needs to put on a little weight. If her ribs are underneath a small layer of fat, she has a good appetite and is otherwise feeling well, she most likely is doing fine. If you are concerned, I would have her weight and body condition checked by her regular veterinarian to ensure that she doesn't have intestinal parasites or anything else that could be contributing to her appearing small. That is about right for the average beagle. More important is how that weight is distributed in terms of location and muscle vs fat. There is no ideal weight as doodles vary so much in size. A perfect weight dog should have a waist when looking down on him and a tucked tummy from the side view. You should be able to easily feel his ribs but not see them when looking from the side. He should have good muscle covering over his spine. The amount of food to maintain ideal body weight varies on size and activity but monitoring how he looks and feels will tell you if his weight is ideal.
