Is my 3-month-old female Shih Tzu puppy too small or underweight?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 7kg is 15.4lbs which is rather hefty for a 7 month old Shitzu. Typically, Shitzu's when they are adults should weight between 8-15lbs. The Happy Dog Grain Free Food is good, but I would feed less perhaps. If there is a guide on the package as to how much to give, I would advise on following their recommendations. At 7 months, she should be less than 15lbs. As always, nothing can beat a hands on veterinarian exam. If you are concerned about her weight, having a veterinarian take a look at Hazal and accurately assess based on her body condition score, if she is truly overweight or not. Chihuahuas weight varies greatly during puppyhood and there is no specific weight chart that we use in practice. Instead we use a more accurate assessment of your puppy's weight, which is his/her body condition score (BCS) where 3/5 or 5/9 is considered an ideal weight. Your vet should be able to tell what the body condition score is easily by simply examining your pet. Also in puppies, unless you see vomiting or diarrhea symptoms, and they are getting feed the proper amount 3x a day, then chances are your pet is of proper weight. Also feel free to share a photo of your pet via consultation request, and we can tell you without a doubt whether your pup is proper weight or not.

I am wondering if she could be a different breed then you were told if you feel she is so small. As long as she isn't sick then it is just her and she may not get so big. Rather than a particular weight, we want to go for an ideal body condition score. Now with young puppies (just like kids) they are growing and the body condition scoring doesn't matter as much, but we still don't want her to be very overweight. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would have his stool checked for intestinal parasites and be sure he has been dewormed a few times. You can increase the volume of food at each meal by 25%. And see if that improves his weight in 2 weeks. Be sure he is seeing a vet for vaccines. Good luck!

As long as she is eating, not vomiting and is active it could just be a fluke and she'll go just fine the following day. The weight and size of a dog depends on genetics and breed. Not all dogs weigh the same, so not all puppies weigh 16 kg at 4 months old. I hope this helps!

From the photos, he looks just fine. You should be able to feel his ribs. If you can see them, he is too thin. If you have shaved his coat for the summer to keep him cooler, please know that a dog's coat insulates against heat as well as cold, so there is no need to do it. The full coat also is some protection against mosquito and tick bites.
