Is my 3-month-old female Shih Tzu puppy too small or underweight?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 26 days old

What's the normal weight of an almost 3 month old female shih tzu? I'm afraid my baby's too small :(

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no easy answer to that question, as a dog's appropriate weight is not just based on their breed but their individual body size. If your dog's ribs are visible or very easily felt, then it may be that she needs to put on a little weight. If her ribs are underneath a small layer of fat, she has a good appetite and is otherwise feeling well, she most likely is doing fine. If you are concerned, I would have her weight and body condition checked by her regular veterinarian to ensure that she doesn't have intestinal parasites or anything else that could be contributing to her appearing small. Good luck!
