Just found a stray puppy! What food should I feed and how often?

Hello, and thank you for rescuing the puppy. You can feed any national puppy food & do very well with it. My favorites are Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin & even Purina. They are all excellent without being gimmicky. Have her seen by your vet soon for parasite protection & vaccinations & she should grow healthy & well. She is small and 5weeks is early to be separated from mother and littermates and such pups can be more prone to anxiety due to limited socialisation. I would recommend feeding 5-6times per day with a complete puppy food (feeding guidelines vary per brand, wet or dry) and once on puppy food would not need additional formula or supplements. Be sure to keep up to date with deworming medication and contact your vets office to arrange vaccinations. Keep her isolated from other, unvaccinated dogs until she is up to date

Congratulations on your new addition! As a general rule of thumb, I typically recommend feeding Science Diet, Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan foods. These companies do extensive clinical testing to assure that their foods are nutritionally appropriate and source ingredients appropriately. Odin should eat a puppy food until he is 1 year old. Anytime you change his diet, be sure to do so by gradually mixing old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. Sudden diet changes have a greater chance of causing vomiting and diarrhea.

I would recommend a good, high quality puppy food. If your puppy is going to be a larger dog then I always recommend feeding a puppy food that is specifically a 'large breed' puppy food. There are many good brands of dog food available. A few of the brands I like and recommend are Hill's, Purina, Eukanuba, Iams, and Royal Canin. Congratulations on your new puppy!

Hello, any of these diets could be recommended by your veterinarian. If you feed the recommended doses as detailed on the bags then this should be sufficient for a puppy, however, in an older dog this may be too rich for her. If your veterinarian is recommending that she continues to eat a puppy food, then my choice would be a Royal Canin diet. Otherwise, you can feed a supplemented or bigger portion adult diet. Hello. At this age, a puppy should be fed 3 times a day with limited treats. You can transition him to twice a day feedings somewhere between 16 - 20 weeks of age. As long as the food you choose is a well-balanced puppy food, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin or Purina, you can continue to feed Roman the canned, or a combination of canned & dry. Hi. You just need to keep them separate until the puppies are examined and cleared to be healthy. Also get fecal samples checked for parasites. I would NOT feed kitten food to the puppies. They need a high quality puppy food, or milk replacer if under 4 weeks. Kitten food is not balanced well for dogs. Especially growing puppies.
