My 5-week-old puppy: Is she too young? How much and often to feed?

She is old enough to be on kibble only ad long as it is a complete puppy kibble and dry is also ok as long as she drinks sufficient water. Every brand is different but should have a feeding guide for amount per age and weight

Hello. I like to imagine the size of the puppies stomach. For a puppy this size, it is approximately the size of a tennis ball, so start with smaller amounts of the dry food & add a little more every day while decreasing the puppy formula. Decrease the amount of puppy formula equivalent to the added amount of gruel she consumes at each meal, which should be offered about 4 times per day. Timing is not so important, but formula in the morning & soft food the rest of the day says about right. Adjust the amounts as necessary. It is hard to overfeed a growing puppy. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre existing conditions. A stool sample should be examined to diagnose intestinal parasites. You can feed him 3-4 times daily. Monitor his weight to confirm adequate gains. Feed a good quality puppy food. You can make a slurry or gruel using kibble and puppy milk replacer. Decrease the amount of liquid over the next few weeks until he is eating just kibble.

I understand how confusing it can be to read and obtain conflicting information. Since Wallace is only 2 months old and is so small, I generally recommend feeding at least 3-4 times per day. The purpose of more frequent feeding at a young age and small size is to maintain an adequate blood glucose (sugar) at all times. Very small, young dogs are at a risk of developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) that can lead to lethargy, weakness, or even seizures if they do not eat frequently. Continue feeding Wallace the same volume of food, but divide it into 3-4 meals per day rather than 2 for the next month or so. Around 5-6 months of age, you can decrease his feeding frequency to twice daily. Just remember to keep an eye on the chart that is found on your bag of food since the volume of food that Wallace will need will change as he gets older and larger. And in terms of the food -- he should be willing to eat wet food, if not dry food, at this age. So if he's not, I would highly recommend a check up with your vet to make sure everything looks ok. He may just need more time to adjust, but with such a young guy, he can get low blood sugar and dehydration very quickly, so it's important to act sooner rather than later.

A toy-breed puppy this age should be eating every 3-4 hours, since they are prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they go much longer than that between meals. As Flynn gets older, you can gradually work towards feeding him less often until you are only feeding twice a day as an adult. As far as the amount goes, this will vary with every brand depending on its calorie content. If you look at the back of the food bag, it should have guidelines for how much to feed per day based on your puppy's age and weight :)
