My stray dog won't get in the car. Can I safely take him home?

There is no way for us to be able to tell you with 100% certainty that it would be safe to catch/touch/adopt a street dog. If the dog is not aggressive you can try to catch it and then take it to a vet for an exam and vaccines. The vet can give you more information about how to proceed from there. The biggest concern is you getting bitten by a stray dog that may have rabies.

It sounds like she's a little scared, which is understandable given it's a new place. It's good on you to look after her, and be concerned about her sleeping outside. You can try leaving a trail of treats into the home, so she has to venture into the house to get the next one. Be sure to move slowly and quietly around her, and once she is inside the house, you can shut the door. You can try getting her inside with a collar and leash as well. If she allows you to carry her, you may be able to pick her up and carry her inside. Finally, you can lead the garage door open a little, and make a bed inside there for her. Leave out food and water next to the bed, and she may be tempted to go inside the garage. I would do that as a last option, as I realize you may not want to leave a door open at night. In the morning, I would recommend taking her into the vet to scan her for a microchip to see if she does have an owner.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I think it is not a great idea to try and force her into a car. The best option, in my opinion, is to have a mobile vet come to your house. That way Roxy doesn't have to travel and she will be more comfortable. They can also probably help you with some ideas on how to get her used to getting into the car. it is hard for me to give advice on this without being present to see her behavior myself. The easiest way to get him would be to set up a live trap. You place food in the trap and when he eventually goes in to get it the door to the cage will close and he will not be harmed. The other option would be to continue what you are doing by visiting him frequently and offering him food and treats. Once he trusts you to get close enough you can slip a leash around his neck to secure him. Keep in mind that even if he comes to you once he will likely still be fearful for a long time. Good luck!

Poor thing! I think it is important for him to get out of that environment. I strongly suspect his progress will be limited while he remains in that environment. Greyhounds in particular tend to be very sensitive, and that is likely a very stressful environment for him. In regards to medications, in his case, I would recommend Trazodone or something similar. The effect would increase serotonin in the brain and likely reduce his anxiety. Other than that, however, I would remove any sedatives or other medication as they may confuse his recovery. If he is food motivated, I would focus on positive reinforcement with food. If not, it is a bit more difficult, and can be very frustrating. The most important thing for him will be to move slowly, remain patient, and use the reward that best suits him- affection, food etc. I hope there is a way that you can get him out of the shelter without a collar and leash. Perhaps he would do better with a harness. I just believe that once he is in your home and can begin to trust you bit by bit that he will improve over time. An alternative would be to have the shelter crate train him. If he can learn that a crate is a safe and comforting place, then you could more easily transport him. It could also be a place in your home that he could have to himself.

Hello. Just because George is a semi-stray does not mean he will not be a good travel companion. Make sure he is happy & unconcerned about being in a carrier & take multiple short trips to get him used to the car. He needs to be up to date on vaccinations & keep the papers with you. You might want to have him microchipped, just in case he manages to slip away, & bring familiar dishes, his food & a bottle or two of home water to make him as comfortable as possible. You will need to catch her and keep her inside your new place for at least 2-3 weeks and feed her there. This will tell her where she now is being fed and where you now live. There is a good chance then that she probably will become tame enough to see your house as the new home. If she does not like your dog, you need to keep the two separate.
