My stray female dog disappeared. Is she pregnant or in trouble?

She may have found food elsewhere, been picked up by Animal Control or someone else, wandered off or she could be ill or injured. With stray dogs, it is difficult to say what may have happened. Hopefully, she will turn up again soon. If not, you can try looking for her.

A feral/stray dog may hide to have their puppies if they were close to labor, however if she is completely lost she may also have gotten injured, or the puppies injured if she is out in the wild. It would be best to keep searching for her, and to let local authorities know that she is missing.

It is possible that she is just taking care of her young for now. There are possible complication after birth like imbalance hormones, a kitten not born causing infection, or even eclampsia (low calcium). If you know where she could be hiding, I would try to find her and take food to her. If not, all you can do is wait. She will likely come out when she is ready. She may have had the kittens and left them someplace secure while she searches for food. You can continue to feed her for the next 6 weeks or so. You may see the kittens before then. If so, you can choose to take them all in. Leaving her out puts her at risk of harm, but taking her in before her kittens are weaned puts them at risk. It is a difficult situation.

If she is in heat and has been potentially left alone with intact male dogs, there is always a chance she may be pregnant. The only way to prevent her from becoming pregnant 100% is to have her spayed, especially if you do not wish to have puppies. It appears that she has grass stains on her, which may have been from her getting out, or just playing in your yard. If she is acting ill, it is best to seek veterinary care to try and determine the cause and treat any injuries she may have gotten. If you suspect she may already be pregnant, taking her to the vet to confirm it is also best.

There are several possibilities: She had a miscarriage and the kittens were dead and she cleaned up, ie ate them. Or she had them and hid them. You will know soon, when she disappears once in a while....you may need to follow her secretly to find the babies. third possibilities is that the babies had some defects and she ate them. She will have a discharge for about a week , which should be odorless. If she gets lethargic, stops eating or if the discharge gets smelly she will need to be examined by a vet.

Poor girl. 5 days is a long time for a pregnant dog to go without eating. At this point the best advise is to take her in to your vet to get looked at. Something could be wrong with the pregnancy and she needs to get tested to determine if an infection is present or what the case may be, and then treated. I hope your girl Kiki is going to be ok.
