My puppy pees in his crate and lays in it. How to stop it?

Hi, The crate should be large enough for them to stand up, turn around and lay down comfortably. If a crate is too large, they will start going to the bathroom in it. Perhaps getting a regular crate but just a proper size might fix the situation. They begin to associate it as their own safe space, and if it's the proper size it will hopefully resolve any bathroom issues while being crated.

You may want to work on crate training Kronos, or start taking him to a potty location more often. A puppy generally needs to go every 1-2 hours at Kronos' age, so you will want to have yourself or someone take him to the potty spot, make sure he goes, and then remove him from the area so he can't lay in it. He likely doesn't quite understand what is going on yet at such a young age. This is a very common problem with puppies :) It sounds like the pen he is in is probably too large - it gives him too much space to work with, and makes it easy for him to wake up and find a spot to pee, rather than either holding it or whining to let you know he needs to go out. Instead of the pen, I would recommend having him sleep in a crate in your bedroom at night. Most puppies instinctively do not want to pee where they are sleeping, so in most cases this means that the pup will whine to wake you up if he needs to go out during the night. As he gets older and his bladder control improves, he should start to be able to hold it all night with no problems.

How frustrating for you! It may be that Nox needs to be let out in the middle of the night to pee, and I would start getting up once in the night to let him out to see if that keeps him from urinating in his crate. If that doesn't help, it could be that he is suffering from separation anxiety and does not like being left alone at night. You can try keeping the crate in your room, or using DAP. This is a pheromone diffuser that helps dogs with anxiety, and you plug it in the room where he is kept. That may help calm him at night and keep him from urinating in his crate.

It will take time to fully train Tank. If he is only 2 months old he can really only hold his urine for about 3 hours. If he starts to whine in his crate at night I would recommend walking him when he starts to whine. When you take him outside I would recommend walking him on a leash. This is because puppies are easily distracted. Once he urinates +/- defecates he can have off leash time in the backyard. With crate training remember anytime you cannot have your eyes on him 100% of the time he should be in the crate. Also if you take Tank outside and he doesn't go to the bathroom I always recommend putting Tank back in the crate for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes take Tank back outside to try again. It takes time and patience to train a puppy, but if you are consistent it will pay off. Since Theodore can't talk, I do recommend to have him checked to make sure there is not a bladder infection or GI parasite. It's very unusual that it's happening with this regularity. Examine your schedule to see if he is staying in the crate longer than usual or skipping a walk/bathroom break. You may also discuss his history with your vet. If Theodore was kept in a crate for long periods as a small puppy where he had no choice but to use the bathroom in the crate, this can effect his crate training and house breaking in later life. It's also possible his crate is too big for him. Try adding an extra walk on Fridays and Saturdays to see if this helps. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Have Bourbon examined by your vet to rule out medical causes such as UTI or congenital defects affecting his urinary tract. At his age, expect to Bourbon to still have "accidents". Reinforce crate training or choose one method of training and stick with it. If you choose the crate, it should only be big enough for Bourbon to stand, turn around and lay down. He can be crated for a maximum of 3 hours (age in months + 1 hour) before needing to go out. This includes overnights. Put him on a consistent schedule for going outside. He goes outside FIRST thing in the morning. Pick a spot outside and wait. No walks until he goes. Praise and reward him when he goes. Place him back in the crate or on a leash attached to your hip so you can watch for his cues to go. This may be circling, whining or sniffing around. Do not leave Bourbon unsupervised until he is house trained. He will need to go about 30 minutes after eating or playing. Take up the water 2 hours before bedtime and take her out right before bedtime. Be patient. Be consistent.
