My neutered senior dog humps legs. How do I stop this behavior?

This is not a sexual behavior, but likely a response to stress, anxiety or to assert his dominance. Correct the behavior immediately when you see it. Remove him from the dog with a stern "No" and offer a toy or task to distract him. Praise and reward him when he complies. If he persists, separate him until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent.

This could be a dominance behavior or may be due to an abnormal production of hormones such as cushings disease. I recommend a full vet check and bloods especially if there are any additional symptoms such as altered appetite and or coat changes

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Humping can be a sign of anxiety or to show dominance. It can also be sexual in nature. I would have Max on a leash when people come over and he should know basic obedience and respond to standard commands like come, stay, sit, leave it. When he starts to show signs of humping you should ask him to come to you and sit, then give him a treat. You should ask your guests to ignore him, not get him worked up, until he has calmed down. You can also consider getting him neutered, it may or may not help. I hope this helps and I wish Max the very best!

Unfortunately this is a normal behavior. Alex is masturbating. When he starts doing it, immediately tell him no, remove him from your arm, and turn your back on him. Ignore him until he behaves appropriately. Once he starts acting normally, give him attention and love. He will learn that he will be ignored if he does this behavior on you.

It sounds like Saxon is masturbating. Even though he is neutered, he still may be prone to doing it because it feels good. It's normal behavior, but if you don't want him to do this in the middle of the night, keep him from sleeping in your room. Best of luck.

Humping is not only a sexual behavior, it can also be a dominance behavior, a stress response, etc. Any new changes lately - new pet in the home, any major changes in his routine or in the house? Not sure what sex the Boston is but either male or female, fixed or not fixed, humping behavior by other dogs is a way of expressing dominance and most times has nothing to do with mating behavior. If it doesn't escalate into a fight, I would advise letting it occur and let the two dogs would out the dominant submissive game that is playing out. Again, I would separate them when you are not there, crating the dogs to prevent soiling of the rooms if you have to. Otherwise seek advice from your veterinarian. They may want to see both dogs and advise you from there. Older dogs can undergo neutering and do need blood work before considering that option. But remember even sterilized dogs will exhibit humping behavior to determine the order of the pack. I hope this helps and good luck
