My dog kills chickens. How do I stop it? Punishment isn't working.

Sadly, this is nearly impossible to train away. It's a situation where nature trumps nurture. If you want to try, I'd recommend working with her instead of sit, laydown, and watch me commands. Once she's amazing at them inside, take her to an indoor public place to get good there, then an outdoor place with no animals, and then out in to the general world. Once she's really really solid with those basic commands you can use them to try to get her attention before she sees the chicken or cat. In the mean time, don't let her practice this behavior (ie keep her on leash at all times and calmly but quickly remove her from the chickens or cats if she starts to go crazy). Zeke is a very handsome guy! I see that he looks like an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie. It's very common for herding breeds to try and chase fast-moving objects like cars. To address this problem, you will need to start with Zeke on a leash at a distance from the road. You need to be far enough away that is able to notice the cars going by without reacting - this may mean you need a *lot* of distance at first, depending on how sensitive he is. Each time a car goes by, praise and reward him with a treat for staying calm. When he's doing well with this, you can gradually begin moving closer to the road, one step at a time. If he gets too excited and tries to chase, just move further away until he can be calm, and work your way closer again. Eventually, with practice, he should be able to stand calmly with you on the sidewalk even with cars driving by a few feet away. It's also important to keep Zeke on-leash or in a safely enclosed area at all times, to prevent him from practicing his car chasing behavior outside of training sessions. It can be challenging to do this on your own in some cases, so if you're still having trouble, I would recommend finding a good reward-based trainer who can work with you in person. This can be a problem. As Karma is a young dog I recommend taking her to an obedience training class. As she learns to obey commands that will help. If she's food motivated you can work with her in the yard on a leash and ask her to sit when you see a person or dog coming. When she watches you praise her and give her lots of treats for the good behavior. Offering an appropriate thing to do that you can praise her for is more effective than yelling at her or physical punishment. Also taking her for long walks or playing ball until she's tired will reduce the behavior. I'm sure part of it is from having excess energy which will improve as she ages. I would put her in the yard at times when there is less distraction so this doesn't become a habit. For now, I would recommend keeping Marge on-leash whenever the dogs are together - this way, you can prevent her from chasing him, and can also reward her for remaining calm when he is around. When you aren't able to do this, it would be best to keep them separated to prevent any problems. As Marge gets older, this problem should improves as she settles down a bit. This is not likely a behavior that can be corrected but it can be managed with a lot of consistency and persistence. Sounds like Coop has a high prey drive which is instinct. Instinct is very difficult to overcome. Your best option is to try working with an in-home, professional dog trainer. Penny is adorable! I suggest getting her into an obedience class or consulting with a trainer. She may be feeling protective of you, which is a good thing, but she needs to learn how and when to be protective. Obedience training is a great first step. Ask your veterinarian if they offer or know of obedience classes, call pet stores like PetsMart or Petco and ask who they recommend.

Hi there. I would recommend keeping him on-leash in the house for now, and keeping some tasty treats handy. Every time he sees one of the cats, praise and give him a treat. Before long, he will start to look expectantly at you for his treat whenever he sees the cats, instead of trying to chase them. Once that happens, you can start to allow some off-leash freedom in the house as long as he's doing well.
