How to teach my puppy to be gentle and stop chasing our older dog?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black and Tan Coonhound | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs

Our coonhound won't stop chasing our small yorkie mix. He's a rescue, older, and terrified of her. She's only 7 months and only a puppy. What can do so she's more gentle with our other pup?

For now, I would recommend keeping Marge on-leash whenever the dogs are together - this way, you can prevent her from chasing him, and can also reward her for remaining calm when he is around. When you aren't able to do this, it would be best to keep them separated to prevent any problems. As Marge gets older, this problem should improves as she settles down a bit.

If these suggestions don't help and there is no improvement in the situation in the next week or so, I would recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer who can work with you in person to help address this issue.
