My 2-year-old German Shepherd digs and barks. How can I stop him?

I will recommend owners try something like this in these situations first, and if distractions and simpke commands don't help, it's time to call a trainer. Trainers can help you work with Stitch in the right way to stop the u wanted behavior. Not only is it annoying, but you don't want him to get in a dog fight, bite a person or another dog, or chase a car and possibly get struck. Sometimes the longer we let bad behaviors go, the longer they may persist.

She sounds like she's a high energy, probably very intelligent dog and she needs a job. Make sure to get her out for lots of exercise, take her with you wherever you can, get her into obedience training, agility, take her to the dog park, go for long walks, runs, play fetch, anything and everything you can do to wear down her energy levels. Also consider getting her a Kong toy to chew during times you'd like her to be calmer and quiet. They are durable, heavy rubber and can be stuffed with peanut butter to occupy a dog for longer periods of time. Make sure to ask them what methods they use and only hire someone that uses only positive reinforcement in their training.

I would recommend only letting her in the back yard when you can supervise her and stop the behaviors. Some people use an extended leash to prevent dogs from getting out HOWEVER that carries some very serious risks such as strangulation if she gets wrapped around something or jumps over a fence, so I don't like that idea. It may also be worthwhile to work with a good trainer or even veterinary behaviorist to find some alternative behaviors to teach her.
