My Pomeranian bites aggressively over shoes. How can I stop it?

If Bruno is aggressive he needs to be confined to the backyard or be walked on a leash. I would get a trainer to work with him and help with the aggression. This is a concern since you are liable if he bites someone. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I hate to hear this is happening. If you do not want to rehome her, I recommend to work with a professional trainer because this will give you the best results the fastest. Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. A professional trainer is fully capable of reading the body language and then teaching you how to modify this behavior. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. I would recommend stop letting him chew on old shoes. He does not understand the difference and will just see the shoes on your feet as moving chew toys. This is likey a fun game for him. Put away all the old shoes. Then if he goes for the shoes on your feet, redirect him to something positive such as a toy. If he is still going after your shoes, walk a way for a bit. He needs to learn this is not an appropriate way to play. I hope this information helps!

I would recommend starting on some basic commands with Panda. This would include sit, come and stay. That way when Panda starts to chew on your feet you can re direct her into a basic command. I would reward her with a treat so he knows that the command is the way she should be acting, I would also recommend starting her in puppy training classes to help with her attention. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would assume she is doing this to get his attention to play. Bella is young and needs a lot of exercise and interaction. I would add more walks or play time. Consider enrolling her in doggie daycare a few times per week. Otherwise I would have a leash on her at all times and when she starts this behavior, pull her down, make her sit and remove her from the situation. Consider 5-10 mins in "time out" in another room or crate. Then exercise her. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately aggression is a very complex topic and one not likely to be fixed without a trainer. Because it is multifactoral- Dobby’s temperament, your temperament, Dobby’s experiences, your experiences, the environment- your surest, fastest and safest bet is to work with a trainer or behaviorist. Basically, the trainer will watch you and Dobby’s, paying attention to how you react to each other and the environmental stimulus. The trainer will then work with both of you to modify both of your behaviors to meet a common goal. The humane society can often recommend a trainer/behaviorist. Otherwise go online and read ratings and reviews. There are several different training methods so you will need to find the one that works best for you and your pup. You should also pick up a book about canine behavior and training so that you can learn to read his body language. I hope this at least points you in the right direction. This type of behavior is usually either inappropriate play that was accidentally rewarded or it could be anxiety based. I would recommend working with a positive reenforcement trainer on appropriate walking behavior and general calmness. In the mean time, when she starts to get crazy on walks, stop, and just ignore her (it helps to count to 10 in your head) until she's calm, and keep going. You'll have to take short walks because this gets old fast! But it will help, especially if you can get some hands on help as well. Enjoy your pup!
